My son recently received his offer for an appoinment, and he plays the bagpipes. We saw that there is a pipe and drum band at the Naval Academy, can anyone tell me about it specifically. Is is comprised of only midshipmen? Do they practice very regularly?

Sorry, I can't help answer the OP's question but doesn't the pipe and drum band have highland dancers? Or am I thinking of USMA?

A friend of mine was the drum major/played bagpipes for them last year. Its all mids, they practice a few times a week, play at formation once a week, play at all parades, go to a few other parades throughout the country every year, and play outside the stadium during march on for football. They also do have the highland dancers as well... Atleast thats everything they did last year, and I don't know how all the fun new changes affected them.

Thanks for your response. That was very helpful. What "fun new changes"?

there is an active Pipes and Drums at USNA ....my Plebe last year hung out all year with them. Yes there is a highland dancer compenent of female mids as well. One of the drummers of the band is also a female and a good friend of my girl.

The 'fun new changes' itlstallion is referring to is all the ways the new Supe has rescheduled mandatory meals/study hour requirements which severely limit extra activities, including Pipes and Drums. Frankly, I haven't heard either about this for this year, since due to the changes my mid could NOT be involved in Pipes and Drums due to the rule changes about how many activities a mid could do from 'each category' as deemed so by the Supe.

Anyway, the Pipes and Drums is an inspiring group and if you son can fit it on, it's great to see the tradition continue at USNA to keep this going!
