I recently was accepted at the Pitt Swanson School of Engineering. I am planning to major in bioengineering while fulfilling pre medicine requirements. While keeping in mind the volunteer opportunities provided by UPMC, is it possible to maintain a competitive gpa for medschool admissions while also participating in adequate research as well as volunteerism? Is following the traditional pre med track better than majoring in bioengineering when I am much more interested in bioengineering? My ultimate goal is to go to med school.

Did you try calling the school to see if they could connect you to some current bioE/premed students?
I would think as an engineering student it might be difficult to maintain a med school competitive GPA.
I recommend reaching out to the Engineering Student Ambassadors. They would be happy to talk to you: http://www.engineering.pitt.edu/ambassadors/

Some info about Bio E
@robberducky3435 I have two dds pursuing bioE @ Pitt - keeping a 3.75gpa is not impossible but fairly difficult. Both dds were in top 5% of their class, with around 1510 sats, multiple APs. blablabla…w weighted gpa in HS around 4.6. Ok, so not slackers right? Well the older dd has a 3.75 gpa (she’s a sr.@ Pitt). She works hard, she has been in the same research lab for 4 yrs, has a couple second author papers published. It is not impossible to get the gpa to be competitive for med school - but it is hard, very hard. Avg gps for engineers freshman yr is around a 2.9. If you have a rough adjustment to college - you might have a hard time recovering from a <3.0 gpa freshman yr. Key is to not be that person. If your hs was not difficult and you breezed by without much in the way of studying or effort, you will have to dig deep to have the same glory in college. It does not bother a prof to give you a C, or a D if that is what you deserve…where I would suspect in HS you would have to be majorly screwing up to get that.
Anyway, just my view.
