I'm seriously considering applying to Pitt sometime here in September and visiting the campus afterwards when I have the time. I'm just kind of nervous about the actual campus which is located in the city. I'm from a small town and I'm not sure if it would be a huge adjustment or not. Has anyone else experienced this?

I didn't mean to submit this thread twice..oops.

My D is a freshman at Pitt and has met many people from all over PA attending Pitt. Many are from small rural towns just like you. Pitt is not in the heart of the city - and surrounding area with Carnegie Mellon right next door and eateries around really feels like a college town. YOu have a park right next door as well. So for my daughter it felt like a college town with city life. I would suggest visiting and speaking with the admission tour students, etc. -I'm sure if they aren't from a small town they are good friends with someone who is and can give you some feedback on their experience.

I know what you mean- I came from the suburbs, but went to a school with only 200 students, so going to a physics class with 100 students was kinda shocking. But I'm not having trouble adjusting at all. Every person has their own difficulties in adjusting- like for me the hard part was getting used to my crazy schedule. I know alot of people from small towns, and they dont seem to be having major difficulties.

The city is really nice- it's not a crazy city like NYC, but it's "city-ish" enough. Everything is in a walking distance, and the buses are pretty easy to take to different places if needed. And there are plenty of restaurants and places to go once you venture out into the city (I always find something new to do). I adjusted quite well and you really mold into UPitt. I'm surprised that I haven't even felt homesick yet! But of course, to each his own. Some kids may not feel the same way.

Message me if you have any questions!

wow, thanks! Your posts were really helpful! I feel better now because people had me nervous with the whole city thing. I guess I'll apply and schedule a visit.

We are from a small suburb outside pittsburgh. My D originally only wanted to go to a small private college. Those colleges are the only ones we visited. Then she decided one day she'd like to visit Pitt just to get a contrast. That was it; the rest were out the window. Now she is a sophomore and can't imagine ever living in the suburbs again. She is a city girl now.

My daughter has the opposite background. She grew up in Manhattan. I tried to steer her toward a bucolic college in the countryside, thinking that a change would do her good, but she said no to that. She decided early on that she wanted an urban college setting, and she loves Pitt. It's just urban enough without being overwhelming. And there is a real campus feeling, with lawns. I agree with what Emi said about the area being city-ish. Lots to do, lots of places to eat, etc.
