Pitt FAQs

I had an amazing Calc 3 teacher (she was actually a graduate student). She taught us chapter by chapter and we had a few exams throughout the semester, as well as weekly homeworks and quizzes so that we were constantly studying. I didn’t self-study much, beyond preparing for a quiz or exam.

Also, it’s just called “Pitt” not “UPitt” :)

Is having overnight guests of the opposite sex a problem?
And can males stay overnight in Holland Hall?

Nope.

Yes, but you should always ask permission from your roommate(s) first before having ANY overnight guests. Also technically speaking I think you can only have a guest stay overnight (any time after 2am) 3x/month (although they rarely check).

hey AO, I’m in the honors college and I want honors housing. can you tell me anything important for the application? is it hard to get honors housing?

Put in some effort with your application. Make sure you spend some time on your essay (have a friend or two proof read it). It shouldn’t be too hard to get in.

I read you’re enrolled in SSOE. To what extent are students able to integrate/succeed when transferring from a Pitt branch campus into engineering? Do the miss out on the connections necessary to secure good co-op assignments?

Did you take the trig placement exam? If so, what score do you need to pass? - I just took the trig exam, and because I hadn’t looked at a trig book in over a year, I missed two of the questions - so I got 13/15. Will this be a problem when enrolling in calculus (or possible calculus 2, depending on my AP score)?

If you come in a sophomore you aren’t missing anything. Very few people get a legitimate engineering internship after their freshman year, so you aren’t missing out. Since you don’t specialize (i.e. declare a major) until the start of sophomore year anyway, this won’t be an issue. Spend that year doing well in classes, trying to get to know professors, and getting an idea of the kind of industry you may be interested in co-oping at. By the end of sophomore year, if you’re interested in co-op, you should have attended the fair and made a few connections.

13/15 is still really good! And I don’t know what kind of score they are looking for, I searched all over online and couldn’t find out. Yes, everyone has to take the trig and algebra exam regardless of your HS background (kind of ridiculous). If you have taken calc in HS and especially if you end up placing out of Calc 1, the score really won’t matter.

I’ve gotten into the honors college and want to take part in honors courses but don’t want to live in honors housing. Is there anything that I need to do to make sure that I can take honors courses? I know that there is an application for housing but is there one simply for courses?

Nope. When you go to your PittStart session, just tell your advisor “I want to sign up for Honors Courses X and Y as well as these other courses.” And do NOT let them deter you for taking whichever honors courses you want and as many honors courses as you want. I took 3 in the fall of my freshman year and my PittStart advisor kept telling me it was too many. I ignored him and demanded he let me sign up for those classes. Ended up doing fine.

should we look into what classes we want to take before pittstart or do we get info there? also where can we find class info? also I went to honors day and they said that since I had high enough ACT and SAT scores, I wouldn’t have to take a math placement exam. are there other placement exams?

Absolutely. If you are A&S you should have a list of about 10 classes (from which you will eventually pick 4-5) that you want to take this fall.

I don’t know how placement works for A&S, for Engineering, everyone still has to take the Algebra and Trig test, regardless of SAT/ACT/AP

I do not remember my daughter taking a placement test for A&S. she started in Calc II.

Hi I am planning to apply to Pitt as soon as the application comes out. I have already taken my SATs twice and ACTS once, and sent both to Pitt. I have a few questions about my other information that I am going to submit.

1) For letters of recomendation, do I ask the teachers to send them directly to Pitt or should I have them sent to me and then I send them out to Pitt? Also where do I send them too and do they keep all of this on file until they receive my application or do I have to send it all at once?

2) For the essay what are good topics. I know Pitt has suggestions, but I think that I should do something different to stand out.

3) Finally, can I send all of my information before I apply? I am going to talk to my guidance councilor this week and ask for her to send my transcript as soon as all of the grades are finished. I am then going to receive my letters of recomendation around June 1st as well as finishing my essay. So am I able to send all of this information as I receive it or do I have to wait until I apply and send it all together. Thanks so much.

Your teachers send them directly. However, if they accept your request to write a letter, you should provide them with a pre-postaged, pre-addressed envelope. If you do not know where to send the letter to, contact OAFA and ask them. There is probably also a form that the teacher includes with the letter which will be used to link it to your application. Look this up on the Pitt Application when it is released online this summer.

Whatever you want to write about in 1-2 pages. I wrote about how my mom taught me how to read.

You need to wait until you apply so that you have an application number that you can use to reference to all your other items.

so yeah I do have to take placement exams do you know what kind of algebra and trig is on there? like what level should I prepare for?

The algebra is pretty basic, quadratic formulas, solve for x, etc. Things like that. The trig is a lot of triangular geometry (know angles) as well as sin functions. Make sure you know all of your sin/cosin/tan laws (i.e. sin^2(x) + cos^2(x) = 1).

When I did my housing contract, I requested the room type I wanted (single) in various dorms but when I got to the final step and reviewed everything it only showed the buildings that I had requested. How do I get it so that it requests the room type?
