Pitt FAQs

Hey AO I have a quick question. I just applied to the Health Related Careers 2 Academic Community. Now I’m between either applying to the Honors Community or the Health Sciences Competitive Edge Community (for living area). I really would rather live in Sutherland (where Honors is) instead of Towers (Health Sciences) but I’m not sure if that would have an effect on my Academic Community. Is it ok to (hopefully) get honors housing and be in the Health Related Careers Academic Community? Also, is it ok to still apply and live in honors housing even if I don’t take any honors courses? Thanks!

It should be in the system as well, but keep in mind that there are very very few singles for freshman (I believe Tower C has reverted to Upperclassman housing) so that your chances of getting one is extremely slim.

Absolutely! The nice thing about UHC housing is that there is no one specific major that lives there. You have everyone from math to engineering to English lit and in between. Being that your major/track is a bit more unique, you may have a bit of a harder time finding study buddies in your dorm, but as long as you don’t mind having guests over or traveling to another location you’ll be ok!

Sure! Taking UHC classes is only part of being active in the UHC community. Living in housing is another. Being involved with clubs another. Attending events (like SHAC or MESS) another. As long as you are involved in some ways, we don’t ask that you be involved in all. In fact, you don’t ever have to take a UHC class if you don’t want! Just make sure to be involved in some other way to give back to the community.

Hey AO!

I was just wondering what you know about the freshman academic communities? Were you in one your freshman year? If so, could you give us a summary of your personal experience or what you thought of the program. If not, do you know of anyone who was in one and wether they thought it enjoyable or worthwhile? Also, have you heard anything about the different ones? I’m intrested in a quite a few of them right now, do you suggest any particular ones (for a social science/humanities major, that is)? Thanks so much!

I only lived in LLCs (Academic Communities). I was always in Honors Housing (Forbes Hall [now Sutherland] as a freshman and Forbes-Craig Apartments Sophomore and Junior year). My friends lived in SPACE (Engineering) as freshman in Towers and Panther (or PA I forget) for the engineering LLC as sophomores.

One word: Amazing. I loved my community enough as a freshman to stick with it sophomore and junior year. The UHC dorm was awesome because

A) Wayyyy more diverse than the general student body at Pitt
B) More academically focused than Towers
C) Better living conditions!

I loved the community feeling that I got in the dorm. I never locked my door. I could always find someone to hang out with just by walking into their room. We would have huge study sessions or HW campouts where a bunch of people would meet up to work on various things (calc in corner 1, chem in corner 2, lab report night, etc.). Plus we did a bunch of fun activities (Rita’s nights, Movie nights, talent shows, etc.) to help stay entertained.

In fact, most of my friends that I still keep in touch with I met through Honor’s Housing as a freshman.

I don’t know all of the ones out there (I know there is honors, engineering, business and nursing. Not sure what else) but I highly recommend honors if you plan on taking honors classes (or being actively involved in the UHC community) and if not I really recommend one with your major depending on how difficult it could be (i.e. engineering, business and nursing it’s always good to have study buddies). They are really a great resource.

Hi AwesomeOpossum,

I had a few quick questions:

For the College of Arts and Sciences, can you “double dip” general education requirements?
How do you prove elementary proficiency in a second language to get rid of the language requirement?
How many AP credits do they allow to satisfy gen eds?

Thank you! H2P!

You can double dip.

There is a test you take at PittStart for language proficiency, but you may also be able to prove it with high school classes. I am not sure.

Don’t k ow your AP question.

Hi MD Mom,

Thank you for answering my questions.
I’m actually in Swanson and was just wondering about the A&S requirements in case I changed my mind from engineering to an A&S major.
I just registered for PittStart and need to take the math placement tests.
I got As and Bs on tests in Math throughout the 4 years of high school, do I need to study?
I honestly don’t remember polar graphs, conics, series, and other in depth stuff from pre-calc. Also, I can’t remember some tricks we learned in algebra that allowed you to graph complex functions without a calculator, seeing as both are non-calculator tests.
So, to anyone who has taken the exams, did you have to study? Should I study? Were they hard or what kind of questions were they comprised of?

Thank you! H2P!

For the Algebra test you will not need to (its basic quadratic formula stuff). For the Trig test study up all your trig function laws (law of sines, law of cosines, etc.)

What dorms do you suggest I go for? My housing stuff is due Friday. I’m thinking

 1. Nordenberg - double
 2. Towers B - double
 3. Holland - double (or Forbes)

I’m a girl and not an honors student so I’m not thinking of Sutherland. I’m thinking of replacing Holland Hall with Forbes, which one do you think is the best between Holland, Lothrop, and Forbes? I’m a bit scared of being in an all female dorm but I heard the rooms are bigger and it’s quieter. But I also heard there’s no air conditioning :open_mouth:

Also, I heard for the dining plan that you should choose the plan with the most dining dollars and the least passes. I was thinking of the 100 dining passes with 825 dining dollars? Do you think that would be enough? I’m scared that I’ll run out of passes.

Did you have like a routine for dining? Like I’ll go to the dining hall for breakfast then I’ll use my dining dollars for lunch and dinner?

Random Question: Do you think I should bring my bass guitar to college? I’ll also bring headphones so the whole hall won’t hear me. Do a lot of people bring instruments to the dorms?

Hi AwesomeOpossum,

Thanks for providing these information. My daughter is choosing the on-campus housing and she missed the application to Honor’s housing in Sutherland west due to some misunderstanding and was advised that she still could apply to Sutherland East along with other freshman not belongs to Honor’s college. What’s your comments about the difference of Sutherland West and East ?

Thank you!

AO, will D be able to see her dorm room (or at least the building) if she has an assignment by the time she comes for Pitt Start in July?

Hello,
I have a question about transferring credits. One of the requirements for Computer Science degree states that all CS courses must be passed with a C or better. If I am a transfer student coming to Pitt with some core CS course credits, how would that work? Another requirement is that “all CS courses must be taken with letter grade (LG) option.” Can anyone elaborate?

http://www.cs.pitt.edu/undergrad/advising/CS-checklist.pdf

Taken for a letter grade, ImDown, just means that you did not take the class pass/fail or whatever your college calls it.

OverseasParent, Sutherland is set up in suites with two or three bedrooms per suite. In your situation, you might try to have your daughter in a more traditional dorm or perhaps one of the learning communities. I think there is a better chance to meet a wider range of people. If you are overseas, I would probably push the honors college housing option and ask one more time if they might make an exception.

Holland is generally considered a last choice for most. Girls tend to be squeezed 3-4 to a room (with no AC, correct) and sometimes the rooms are quite small! If you are engineering I definitely recommend Forbes as the rooms are better and you will be around many of your classmates (studying becomes a lot easier when you live with your classmates).

You won’t. Almost no one eats at the dining hall for breakfast (I normally grabbed a milk chug and a little pastry in the mornings from a coffee cart). Lunch can be either in the hall or at one of the to-go eateries around campus, mainly the hall is used for dinner. I think that’s a good plan to stick with. Plus if you run out of passes you can always buy more but if you have extra they disappear at the end of the semester.

Yup! Always got milk (or coffee) with a pastry for breakfast on days with early classes. For lunch if I had >1 hour I would go to the dining hall, otherwise I would eat at the closest to-go place based on my next class (Generally Einstein’s in Benedum or at Cathedral Cafe/Schenley Cafe). Dinner I would either eat at the dining hall if I wasn’t too busy or grab something to go to eat in my room.

Up to you! Quite a few people brought their instruments with them to college. My roommate for two years always had her Viola with her. Another roommate had her clarinet. It’s not unheard of!

They’re the same, actually. Sutherland West is the UHC Housing, Sutherland East is Freshman Athletics housing. She can only apply for Sutherland West. Tell her to get in contact with the UHC ASAP if she wants to live there and see if there is room for her to apply still.

If she is living in Towers and doing the overnight stay for her PittStart she will be in a Tower A or Tower B room. Otherwise no. She can see the outside of the building (and perhaps the lobby) but beyond that they will not let you in until you move-in during orientation in August.

Hi AO,
Thanks a lot for your kind advise.

Hey Awesome, could you recommend any good Calc 3 teachers? Any I should stay away from?

^My son had Inna Sysoeva and said she was the best math teacher he ever had. Check her on rate my professor also- she has stellar ratings.
