Anyone coming into SSOE after freshman year should have Chem 1/2 (Chem 2 involves a lab as well), Physics 1/2, and Calc 1/2. Note that a lot of APs (Physics C, Chem, Calc BC) would cover these classes as well. That way starting sophomore year you can declare into a department/major and only have to take the transfer programming class (ENGR 0012) which is one semester long. If you don’t have some of these requirements, you will probably spend a semester playing catch up (i.e. taking Physics 2, Chem 2 w/ lab, whatever you’re missing) before you have enough to transfer in.
I don’t know about business particularly but I have never heard someone complain about the LLC they ended up in. It’s always nice to be living near classmates so that you have someone to sit with, study with, etc. And the LLC’s do tend to be a bit more academically-oriented so it will be a nicer atmosphere over all.
Not at all, I knew a lot of friends in “rigorous majors” (Engineering, Math, etc.) who did marching band all four years. A friend of mine (Civil Engineering) was actually drum major our senior year. The band practices at night and I believe you can take it as a class so that your schedule is blocked off for that time. A good person to talk to would be @amandakayak who I know has at least one son in the band!
@screenname409http://www.pittband.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=5&Itemid=2 Lots of info about hours required. My ds has been in Pitt Band all 4 yrs, ChemE major with BioE minor - usually taking 18 credits (except this yr I think he’s at 16). I think that could be considered a pretty rigorous courseload! He’s also been involved in on-campus research, participated in a band svc frat, leadership position in an EC club, played in the concert band in springs most semesters (1 credit). This yr is the first yr, the band pays a small scholarship to students (I think frosh get $100? it rises up to $400 for 4-yr participants). The band plays home games and usually one away game with the entire band. I think they have opportunities to participate in small pep band contingents for some important away games where they don’t take the entire band (this last yr, BC and UNC were two my son went on). Additional opportunities in spring to join one of the pep bands (bball primarily) and they do some travel to away tournaments - voluntary. Marching band can be taken as a 1 cr. elective if your schedule will permit. For his first yr, he was at 18 credits so it was not possible. Later yrs, I think he did take the 1 cr. - nice GPA booster.
I think PSU band is great and it must be exhilarating playing to a stadium packed full - but the idea that you had to “make” the band - and 1/3 (that was what was quoted to us in 2011 when he was deciding) would not make it, and be cut just weeks before school started at band camp - was a little too hard core for him. Pitt is inclusionary and that was important to him. He was able to move in a few days early before freshman yr, joining the band at bandcamp and making a hundred or so friends before school even started. I posted a thread on here about PittBand with a video, take a look.
Oh forgot to add, as a member of the band, they get alot of swag. It’s ridiculous actually. New nike sneakers, Nike warmup jacket, pants, shorts, t-shirts, caps…and stipends are given for all away events to cover incidentals. They are part of the athletic dept so beyond the crappy office location (basement of Trees) they take care of the band pretty nicely. For last bowl game, the entire band was flown to TX and put up at a very nice hotel, all expenses paid.
Hey guys! If anyone could chance me for Pitt Nursing that’d be awesome. I’m a junior and Pitt is my dream school.
SAT Score: 1930 (this was my first score, taking it 2 more times)
GPA: 92 (taking all honors/2 APs)
Major: Nursing
ECs- Varsity sport 4 yrs, 3 clubs, volunteer activities, leadership award, job, community service corps leader
I have taken all honors courses throughout high school and 5 APs
I’ve also had hospital clinical experience which i’m hoping will set me apart.
Hate to bring up stuff from a week back, but there indeed are freshmen floors in Lothrop (at least this year). That being said, the rooms there anywhere near the best of what the university has to offer in terms of housing.
@Screenname409 I’m a freshman that just did marching band last semester and I’d say it’s pretty manageable. You might not have too much time for more than a couple of outside clubs, but it is definitely feasible to get all your homework and studying done whilst making it to all practices. Outside of football games, there are a couple of day-long commitments during the school year (but you could feasibly do a bunch of homework during those bus rides). I ended up having plenty of free time to take naps and hang out with friends.
@AwesomeOpossum I was accepted to Pitt around October-ish and I still have not heard anything about merit aid and it is not in my online account. Does this mean that there just isn’t anything they are offering me?
Apparently there were more applications than expected this year, so the committee is taking extra time to go through everything. With that said, I imagine if you don’t hear by April 1 that nothing will arrive after that point. However, I could be wrong.
@sarabear15, I work in the Office of Admissions. The Scholarship Committee is still reviewing applications for merit aid. They automatically review any student who applied before Jan 15 and was admitted, so they have a lot of apps to go through! They are working hard to finish up the last of the review asap, so if you are selected to receive merit aid you should hear very soon.
@hailtopitt1787 You are a tremendous source of info! Wondering if you know about regular financial aid award letter? that is the last piece of the puzzle for us. thanks!
This may be a silly question, but when does Pitt send out their financial packages such as need based aid and total cost to attend? For me personally, this is really important in comparing final decisions.
I filed the Financial Aid Verification Worksheet (at the Alumni Hall FinAid office) on Friday and was told that my daughter should hear about need-based aid sometime near the end of the month.
@researchQ and @eyeofthetiger, I have been told that the Financial Aid staff are putting those packages together now. As @apittparent said, sometime near the end of the month is a good estimate. I don’t have enough information to give you a more precise time, but I do know they are working hard to get it all out as soon as they can!
I got accepted by University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, it is not my first choice. However I know the university has relocation, if I meet all requirements for relocation, such as GPA, require cources and so on. Am I guaranteed to tranfer from Bradford to Main campus? Moreover, for relocation, does it have any different for international student?
In regards to band, what would my options be as a mallet player? I know there is no front ensemble for marching band, so that’s out. Would I be able to do symphonic band or something else?
Here is the list of relocation requirements. Note that it depends on what school you are switching into at Pitt, rather than which campus you came from or your status as a student (i.e. IS vs OOS vs International). https://www.upb.pitt.edu/relocation/
I don’t know about it being guaranteed but if you meet the requirements the transfer process seems to be straight forward.
AwesomeOpossum, we have searched for this and cannot find mention of the Catholic Student Center at Pitt. Do you have any knowledge of any groups on the Pitt campus?
You should be able to find out more from that group. I don’t know if there is a Pitt-specific group but the Newman Center is definitely a good starting point.
I’m sorry if this question has been asked before. I’m helping out a friend whose son was accepted to Pitt and would like to do an overnight visit before making his decision. My friend was told that overnights were not allowed. I know my daughter did one years ago through the Pathfinders. Can you please let me know?
