@macnyc, Unfortunately, we cannot host prospective students on campus overnight any longer due to liability concerns and some changes in policy. But, if your friend’s son does visit campus, one of our student tour guides will show everyone one of the freshman residence halls on the campus tour. He can schedule a campus visit or even attend one of our Days for Admitted Students (very fun events we’re hosting through the spring). He can call our Visit Center: 412-624-7717 or go to oafa.pitt.edu/visit for more information!
Yes. There are one or two in the William Pitt Union that anyone can walk up and play (in the lobby). Naturally that’s a high-volume area so if you want to putz around/practice you can use one of the practice rooms in the Music Building (stone building located at Fifth and Bellefield).
@hailtopitt1787 how soon after deposit online will the student get her Pitt Start sign up dates?
Just wondering because the kid hit the commit button this weekend, but aside from the receipt that popped up upon payment, she hasn’t gotten any email from Pitt?
My D got an email about 3 days after tuition deposit with Pitt ID and inviting her to sign up for Pittstart. She set up her Pitt email then. So you should hear something soon.
I don’t completely get the honors housing option. To me it seems like self-segregation that separates the honors kids from the rest unnecessarily. Can you speak about your experience with it? Are the pros the suite style living or is there more than that? What is the feel of living in honors housing opposed to the other options?
The Honors LLC was a great way for me to integrate into college my freshman year. From my experience (Honors LLC was in Forbes Hall when I was a freshman) the nicest thing about the LLC was the importance placed on academics and personal growth. I would say 90-95% of the occupants number one priority was doing well in classes. Having an academic mindset made Forbes a much better place for me to live and study than say, the “party atmosphere” that perpetuated with Towers A and B.
The other great thing was that it really did feel like a community (again I was in Forbes which only housed about 200 or so students). I recognized/knew the name of almost everyone in the dorm within a few months. Since many of the occupants were taking UHC classes (which are generic freshman year, i.e. UHC Chem is the same for arts & sciences and engineers) a lot of my dormmates were also my classmates. This made studying/getting help on homework way easier. Plus, the level of trust in our building was amazing. I would leave my textbooks everywhere, leave movies or video games in the lounges, and everyone had respect for everyone else’s belongings. I never locked the door to my room (open door policy was big in the Honors LLC) and it was a great way to interact and meet people.
It didn’t really feel like segregation to us (or elitism). Sure some other students made fun of the Honors LLC occupants but it never really bothered us. I had a lot of friends who would visit the dorm to study/hangout say that they wished they had applied to be in it because it was one of the most welcoming communities on campus.
My DD is interested in Pitt Engineering and most likely would come up short for the honors program. She is a serious student and gets involved in things but does not have a party mentality. Would the Engineering LLC be a good option for her? Are there any other options to avoid the more party like dorms?
Edit: I actually just read the Engineering LLC thread. But I wouldn’t mind an answer to the last question. Thanks!
Any of the LLC dorms would fit this requirement. For an engineering student, the two I would always recommend are the Engineering LLC (Forbes) or the Honors LLC (Sutherland). Either will provide a good academic “home” environment compared to say, Towers A or B.
No - quality is eh and they market themselves as if it is the university but like those mailings for finals-care-package…you can do better on your own.
mattress is not super thick like at home might be - not sure if it’s xl - we always used tshirt sheets that would stretch if needed - also people lofting beds may use a full comforter to drape over whatever was below (dresser, boxes…)
I bought a mattress cover (similar to this: http://www.target.com/p/room-essentials-twin-xl-mattress-pad-basic-white/-/A-13970204#prodSlot=medium_1_8&term=mattress+pad) which is like a thick padded sheet to put over the mattress. Then I put my set of Twin XL sheets that I bought over that. A lot of my friends said I always had a comfortable bed (which is saying a lot since the beds at Pitt are a twin XL mattress on a wooden board) so the topper definitely helped. My mom bought mine for me and believe both were from Home Goods, but places like Target and Walmart should sell them for relatively cheap as well.
