Pitt used to send email notifications of what tickets they had if you signed up for this service. I think you can still sign up for the informative newsletter. Otherwise, you can just check out the PittArts website:

^ thanks, i really appreciate that.

Hey do you guys know anything about getting season tickets for the basketball games? I know the football games are really easy to get. But i was wondering what the chances are of getting them freshman yr.

How difficult is it to maintain a 3.0 GPA? I know that at some colleges, professors use grading systems that some might view as unfair, which make it more difficult to maintain your grade point average.

I was offered a scholarship, and the requirement is that I maintain a 3.0…I love the Pitt campus but it’s not my first choice in terms of academics. I’m seriously considering going there because of the scholarship offer, though, so grading definitely ties into my decision…

Men’s basketball tickets – it is by lottery. You increase your chances of getting tickets if you attend the early games/women’s basketball games or anything that offers you “loyalty” points. The more points you have, the more chances of having your name selected for a ticket. I would say the games early in the season are easy to get, it is much tougher to get tickets now since everyone wants them and will throw their name into the lottery. Son has been able to get tickets to all the games except for one and he is a freshman.

3.0 GPA - depends upon your classes and professors. Each professor grades differently. The 3.0 isn’t bad as some schools require a 3.25 or 3.5 to maintain a scholarship.

Thanks a lot… I’m really looking forward to going to the games. The oakland zoo seems pretty crazy

I think it depends on a couple of things, namely, what you’re taking, and what your preparation has been. I know some programs like nursing, the hard sciences, premed, and engineering are reportedly very tough at Pitt, as they are elsewhere. Also, have you had a rigorous, solid background? Was your high school decent? These will all be factors. My daughter was very well prepared, and so far (knocking on wood) she hasn’t had a problem. Profs often offer a way to earn extra credit, and sometimes your lowest grade in the class can be dropped.

And the 3.0 is more generous than some others I’ve heard about, which include 3.5 and 3.2. I was happy to hear about the 3.0. Also, there is an appeals process, where you can try to make up for any deficiencies to keep the scholarship. So if you like Pitt, I wouldn’t let that stop you!

My son just got accepted into the Pitt honors college but is worried that it will be filled with nerds. Any comments?

The honors college isnt a seperate college. You can be in the honors college and not even take any honors classes. There is honors housing but it is only optional. Basically put, you can make the honors college experience whatever you want it to be. You dont have to hang out with “nerds” if you dont want to.

I’m planning on doing a CAS/Business dual major… of course, nothing is set in stone at this point in my life! I think I’m been pretty well-prepared…my high school was decent. Not the best, but pretty good.

Thanks for your response, it was helpful. :)

how good is the political science or environmental science programs at pitt?

There are some nerds in the honors college housing but I have noticed there quite a few ok people as well. 3.0 isn’t hard to maintain in any major unless you are taking a ridiculous amounts of credits, going out every night, doing too many activities, you get the idea.

What do you guys think about freshman dorms. I checked out Lothrop and i thought it was pretty nice. The rooms are a lot bigger than the towers so i heard. I havent seen the towers dorms though. What do you guys think?

We’re from OOS and wondering if Pitt is a “commuter school” in any way, or do most students stay for the weekends?

Most kids stay on the weekends!

Yes, those who live in the dorms usually stay. There are many OOS students at Pitt and it seems they want to recruit even more. Your child will not be alone on the weekends!!

Anyone familiar with the international relations/political science/history departments?

How is the business program at Pitt? What’s the difficulty compared to other science majors?

Anyone familiar with the engineering (specifically civil engineering) program?

I think the engineering school is excellent. All students I know have had nice internships or co-ops. Seniors I know all have either jobs or grad school lined up already. The engineering school has many honor and professional organizations, and offers scholarships separately from the OAFA. Engineering holds a semi-annual Career and Internship Fair to connect students with employers.
