Pitt Junior here, any questions?

Yes 10char

oh really how far is it to like walmart target kmart bestbuy and chain stores like that...r those kind of stores even in the area?

When's the best time to apply tothe college to make sure that my D will be accepted to a school she wants and major?

jb12...it depends. Pitt has rolling admissions which is a benefit to apply early (this summer?) to the college of arts and sciences. I don't believe, however, that the various profesional schools (nursing, pharmacy, etc) work that way. You probably should check with the specific school she is interested in.

As noted above, Pitt has rolling admissions, which is great for finding out quickly about acceptances. However, it is VITAL to apply as early as possible if you are trying for one of the guaranteed admit programs, or nursing or physical therapy, etc. Last year, one of my D's friends applied in the middle of October for nursing school and did not get in - Pitt only has 100 admittance slots for nursing, and with rolling admissions, they fill up quickly. (P.S. the friend had to settle for Case for nursing)

I don't think you can apply during the sumer. I believe the application process starts in September, I'll see if I can find an exact date.

PlayaX01, there is a Target at the Waterfront, about a 10 minute drive from campus. The nearest Wal-Mart is a little further (I don't know if Pitt takes you to Wal-Mart, but you can take a city bus.)

Prospective students attending the special summer visit programs ("Ready, Set, Pitt" and "So You Want To Be A..." have the opportunity to apply for admission while on campus that same day. My D applied last summer at one of those programs, and Pitt waived the $45 application fee for everyone who submitted their application before leaving that day. I don't know if that waiver is available this summer, but the Admission web page shows that they are again accepting applications during those programs. Last year, they told applicants they would begin notifying accepted students in order based on receipt of their fully completed application (HS transcript & standardized test scores submitted, letters of recommendations in, optional essay in, etc.), starting in early October. D made sure she had all required supplemental items in by mid-September, and she received her acceptance letter in early October. Pitt was her clear number one choice, and knowing she had that admission letter in hand made for a very happy and less stressful senior year!

The same here for my D tedebear. She visited in the winter and they encouraged here to do one of the overnight admissions sessions during the summer. She went in July and applications were encouraged to be submitted prior to leaving. The admissions fee is waived if you apply at one of these sessions. She had her SATs, optional essay and recommendations in by early Sept and her transcripts in early October and heard by Halloween. It was a big relief to have one acceptance in hand so early in the admissions process.

tedebear and jsmom - great advice. We are going in a couple of weeks for the overnight and I have printed out a copy of the application so we can review it and make sure we have all the necessary information with us. We will then follow your advice and get the transcripts, essays, recommendations, etc. to Pitt in September. Getting an acceptance (hopefully) from a school like Pitt in October sounds great, especially in these high stress college application times.

Dadinator - they will have the applications there when you go - so no need to bring a copy from home - I'm not sure if the application they give you at the Admissions session notes that there is no application fee. My D is attending Pitt in the fall. We're thrilled it's a great school and being in state PA, a great price. Good luck to you and your family with the college application process!

hi i just got my schedule and i'm taking analytic geometry and calculus 1. do you know how that is graded or how math classes in general are graded?

The policy for the math department is that you cannot get more than one grade different than the grade you get on the final exam, and they seem to really stick to it. Of course, they expect that your final exam grade reflects what you have learned. Not a good policy for those who are not good test-takers. All I can say is do your homework diligently and keep up on a daily basis.

For those students who applied to Pitt in July (or anytime over the summer),
what part of the application did you fill out? Did you bring a completed essay with you or did you send that at a later date?

Musical Mom - You just fill out the student information part of the applicaton - name, address, etc. and then send your essay, teacher recommendation, test scores, etc. afterwards.

Thanks jsmom!

S had his essay ready to go and he handed it in with his application. Then we had his HS transcript sent along with ACT/SAT scores.

JimmyC045 or any other current Pitt students - my D will be a freshman this year and will be attending Pitt Start June 26th. Today she was looking through the course selections and finding most everything she is interested in taking is full already. Even some freshman required courses for her major. She's not registering that late.......so I am wondering if this is typical and how difficult it will be for her to get the courses she wants. And what happens second semester - how does registration work then? Thanks.

From what I hear, even though Pitt accepeted a lower percentage of students this year, the freshman class is especially large. I think the percentage of accepted students who are matriculating was suprisingly high. That is probably part of the problem.

Also, once online scheduling becomes fully functional next fall, scheudling should be easier.

Next semester, she will meet with her advisor to go over the classes she wants to take, and then will schedule another appointment with the advisor to actually schedule the classes. My best advice is to get the earliest available times for those meetings.

my advisor said that some classes show full or closed even though they really arent at all....so its still possible she could still get into the classes... when she's sitting down with the advisor they unlock it so that a student can still get in
