Re: honors program. If you post a specific question, you're more likely to get answers. As for the Towers gym, it's for anyone living in the Towers complex.

so this weird thing keeps happening to me... every time i tell someone i want to apply to pitt, they give me this blank look like "i've never heard of it...why would you want to go there?" (On the contrary, places they HAVE heard of are michigan-ann arbor and wisconsin-madison.)
well, i THINK i want to go to pitt because of the honors program and the city. but is it as good as i think it is? Are the honors students smart/motivated? Are the classes interesting/challenging? Does it have a midwestern feel or is it more east coast-y? Are there things you like/don't like about going to pitt? is it comparable to any other state school honors colleges?
thanks so much.

Funny thing: As a New Yorker, I get the opposite reaction when I tell people my daughter is going to the University of Pittsburgh. They say, "Oh, that's a great school!" Half the time I think they're confusing Pitt with the University of Pennsylvania. I just nod my head and say, "Yes, it is!" :D

Oh, and by the way, I was looking at the most recent common data set for Pitt, and according to that, 25% of the student body is from out of state. That's a sharp increase from the last time I happened to check, when it was about 8%. So I guess Pitt's push to diversify the student body is working, at least geographically.

^It is a great school. High marks for bio e, ie, philosophy and medicine.

I come from the Southwest and I would say Pitt has more of an "east-coasty" feel than "midwest" like UMich. I say this because the campus is in/near a trendy area full of college students (Carlow Univ, Carnegie-Mellon) and is surrounding by beautiful, dare I say, monolithic buildings such as Cathedral of Learning, Heinz Chapel and the Carnegie Museums. Schenley Park is right there too, and I saw lots of students hanging out there or walking to/from to play football, frisbee, basketball, biking, walking.

I also wanted to say that, as a parent of an incoming freshman (class of 2012), every single person we've ever had interaction with, either from the University or hotels/airport/restaurants has always been so nice and friendly -- which my husband calls "midwestern charm." Univ of Pitt has absolutley made life so easy for us in the application/acceptance/"getting to know you" phase and we hope it continues through freshman year and beyond.

I just visited wednesday/thursday. I met with an Honors admissions counselor, a bioengineering professor, and I had an engineering tour and information session. I think I got a good feel for Pitt. And I liked it.

The Honors College is definitely the way to go if you're motivated. Housing, courses, advisers, scholarships, being with more intellectual people. From what I've heard the Honors College gives you a small school feeling, but sports and the city give it a big school feeling. The Honors courses will be challenging and you will be with motivated students. I would say it's an east coast school. And even though you're out of state I'm sure you can a lot of scholarship $ if you have good stats. To me, Pitt seems like a great place and a good deal.

Is P2P sharing allowed on the pitt network? cause i donwload a song at leaset every toher day...like limewire and stuff....i already put it on my computer, when i get to pitt will i still be able to download music off of limewire or did pitt somehow block it?

No, P2P file sharing is not allowed on the Pitt network. Here's what the policy is:

[quote]
Sharing materials for which you do not own the copyright, including music, movies, and software, or materials that are not in the public domain can result in the suspension of your network access privileges from the residence halls. In addition, the copyright holder can take legal action against you.

The document "Formal Notifications of Copyright Infringement Procedure for Handling Complaints Against Resident Students and Other Network Computer Users" describes the action taken by the University when it receives a copyright infringement complaint against students and others.

I think that's pretty much standard policy at universities. For more info, here's the page:

My daughter doesn't know anyone personally who was "busted," but she said there are rumors around of kids who have gotten caught.

Pitt didn't provide me on housing campus (I know it sucks horribly). Where else could I stay that is affordable? And Pitt didn't give me financial aid either (my family isn't even middle class I would say).

Is anyone here majoring in Economics? If so, how do you like the classes you've taken so far?

I don't know what Pittstart is and I have no idea how to register....

The cheapest place to stay would be in South Oakland (geographically its central oakland, but w/e). Look on craigslist, there are millions of places there. Most of the residents are Pitt students

N/A

Its when you get shown around campus a bit, register for classes, etc. Call Pitt. Or google Pitt start and follow directions on the website.

-Regarding the P2P thing. I haven't done it when I lived on campus, but I know many people who have. Anyway, not worth the risk IMO. Its morally wrong in either case.

You'd better hurry up and get your Pittstart session lined up. It's mandatory to attend. You need to meet with your adviser and choose your courses for next year.

PittStart: What is PittStart?

Also, three years of on-campus housing is guaranteed to entering freshmen. Are you a transfer? Why didn't you get housing?

I don't have my student ID?? They said they'd give it to me after I paid my deposit but alas here I am.

I applied and was accepted late; apparently no more housing was left. Pitt is already extremely irritating me.

You applied late...did you stop to consider you might be irritating them? ;)

My D is looking at Pitt for nursing. She has a 99 average and 2100 on her SAT's......do you think she has a shot at the honors program ? what can you share about the nursing students in general.

My S has just added Pitt to his list, and since we're on the west coast, we won't be able to get out for a visit before we get his app in (hoping that getting it in early will help his chances). Anybody know if not visiting will be a disadvantage in admittance? From all I've read about Pitt, I think it would be a great fit for him, but wonder about the diversity of the campus. He's not a big sports kid, likes gaming, friends, etc. -are there quirky kids at Pitt?

It's a semi-reach for him I think with a 3.0 gpa and 31 ACT.
