I have full tuition at both. I’m pre-law, poli sci, global studies. I see Ohio State has a higher rated law school but somehow…Pitt just sounds more fun. I’ve got some other offers too. I want a friendly, non-cutthroat atmosphere.
I’ll take a crack at this since I went to Ohio State many years ago while my son goes to Pitt (and I am actually from Pittsburgh). I would not say that Pitt is more “fun” than Ohio State. Both universities are fun but in a different way. Obviously the atmosphere associated with the sports teams is superior at Ohio State. Both Universities bring quite a bit of culture to the campus. However at Ohio State, most students stay within the campus bubble - the university is also much bigger than Pitt. In Pittsburgh, students are more likely to experience the rest of the city via cultural events, exploring nieighborhoods, volunteering, etc. Pitt is more a part of the city as a whole while OSU is a world into itself. The free bus pass is really nice and encourages this at Pitt.
I had a great time at OSU - I really think you can’t go wrong. The quality of the law school makes no difference for an undergraduate. OSU does have a huge alumni network which may work in your favor in the future.
Looks like both schools have living/learning (scholars) programs. Would like to hear about that at either school.
The response of @southeastmom matches my experience with both schools, as well. OSU students love their football team (justifiably so!) and going up and down High Street. Pitt does seem more integrated into the city life of Pittsburgh, and the campus boundaries aren’t quite so delineated as they are at OSU. Pitt is mixed in with the art museum, Phipps Conservatory, etc. and CMU abuts it. There isn’t quite the insularity of OSU. It may be why Pitt “sounds” more fun. But if you are in to a fierce loyalty to your school, I don’t think anyone has more “fun” than the Buckeyes, although it seems all-Buckeye, all-the-time! Don’t even think about mentioning the name of the team up north.
As for law schools, you’ll be applying to law schools all over. Both Pitt and OSU are fine law schools, but I wouldn’t let that influence my undergrad choice. If, for example, you were to do undergrad at one, and law school at the other, that could significantly open up job prospects for you in both states.
Thanks to all! Interesting stuff.
You also had a law school guarantee for Pitt, right?
@mommdc Yes, I did. I have offers from 5 colleges now. But I have to say, Pitt has done everything possible to help me through the application process and keep my attention, make me feel welcomed etc. I really like some of their study abroad options and it looks strong in my major. Impressed by Pitt, for sure.
