I've had a lot of family members/neighbors/etc tell me I'd be a great match for CMU, and it's a wonderful school (and almost all of them said this) except for the city it's in. Is Pittsburg really that awful?

I recently went on a visit and the area around CMU is basically like the area around BU, NYU etc. But like every big city i’m sure Pittsburgh has it’s rough parts. It might be that they think you aren’t a city kid student. However CMU doesn’t feel like a city school at all. Go on a visit and you’ll get a good sense of the school.

locals will probably dislike if you spell the city’s name wrong (there’s an “h” at the end)! ;)

but but for real I’ve actually found that it’s a really pleasant city. It’s pretty bikeable once you get used to the hills, there are tons of cool events that happen (Pierogi Night is a monthly popup restaurant that is vegan and soooo goood, First Fridays are always on Penn and you can get the raddest thrift shop stuff & see some fun art). Shadyside & Squirrel Hill have really nice shopping/restaurant areas, and Schenley Park is great to run through. It’s not super big like NYC or whatever, but I’ve found there’s a good balance between having a lot to explore and small enough to quickly become familiar with the areas surrounding CMU.
