Planning for ED: U Penn; Regular: UC Berkeley, Cornell, Northwestern

Hi, I'm a South Korean high school student who wants to major in Communications&Media; I've been doing tons of research lately and after considering various factors, I figured that these universities would be the ones that I would desperately hope to attend in the future. Hopefully, I would like to get into U Penn or Berkeley; I get that it's hard to estimate my chances right now because I'm a rising junior who took only the SAT II Math IIC (800) and no APs, but could you give me a sense of what it would take for me to get accepted to the universities above, once I have succeeded in getting the scores that I want?

Are you instate for Berkeley?

no…

UPenn is incredibly hard for almost everyone. Still you have great stats and applying ED will surely help you.
These schools are selective so in order to not end up being college-less, do add a few more colleges to your list.

Can you afford to pay out of state tuition and fees for Berkeley around 55k+ per year? University of California schools rarely give aid to out of state students.

Probably yes…but the first thing would be to actually get accepted…

Good grades and standardized test scores. ECs are interesting (Journalism). I agree that you will have a pretty good chance at most of these schools. However keep in mind that most schools will not accept too many internationals, but you have a decent shot.

Suggest to add some safety schools to your list

Here is another thing. Colleges don’t care if you don’t get 5s in all AP classes. I’m sure there are going to be some people here who disagree with me, but this is what I’ve heard from even people like Berkeley, UCLA’s, and Johns Hopkins’ ex-adcom people. However, they do care whether or not you passed all your tests with a 3 or higher, preferably mostly 4s and 5s. Just a bit of food for thought. You have a pretty good chance, though, so good luck!

Can you chance me back, too, please?

Jinwoo: don’t worry about aps! They will understand that you are an international. Good stats and I almost certain you will get in, seeing as you want to major in communications. Best of luck!!!
