Please assess my chances of getting into Yale.

I don't want to post the name of my high school, but It's a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence! A private, Catholic school

GPA:
3.8(out of 4.0) unweighted, 4.0(out of 4.0) weighted

SAT:
2070 (680 Math, 720 Writing, 670 Critical Reading)

SAT II:
660 Literature, 560 Math II

Class Ranking:
19/173

Senior Schedule: Semester Grade
Government H/Economics H 89
Latin III H DC 96
Calculus BC AP DC 78
Physics B AP 92
Computer Science CP 99
English IV AP 92
Theology IV CP 95

My only other B (ever) is from last year, in my English III AP class.

**My school only offers 4 AP classes for seniors.
I'm awful at calculus, but I wanted to take the most difficult math course offered at my school, so I went for cal BC AP (last year I took pre calculus because calculus AB wasn't offered). I am very concerned about my calculus semester grade. It's not like I didn't try, and it's not like I'm bad at math. I made A's in all of my previous math classes. I guess calculus just isn't my thing :/

Major: Classics
I love Latin and all things Roman! I was on the 1st place team at this year's National Junior Classical League certamen competition (a classics/Latin competition similar to an academic bowl). It was pretty intense... Classics is my passion! So I wonder, how many people actually apply as classics majors? Does this make me more interesting than, say, an applicant who wants to major in biology? I have the extracurriculars to back me up (aside from my 1st place certamen medal, I also have many awards from different NJCL competitions ranging from Greek Derivatives to Greek Mythology). With this all being evident, will my bad semester grade in calculus still be my downfall (along with my awful SAT II math II score)?

Leadership:
President of Renaissance club (supports those who make Honor Roll every quarter) (member 1yr, President 3yrs)
Vice President of Med-Team (member 2yrs, VP 2yrs)
Secretary of Latin club (member 2yrs, Secretary 1yr)
Team Captain of school certamen team (member 1 yr, Captain 1yr)
Treasurer of NHS chapter (member 1yr, Treasurer 1yr)
Mu Alpha Theta Member (2yrs)
Student Ambassador (3yrs)
Prom Committee (one time thing)

Athletics:
11 belts from Kenseido and Okinawan Shorin Ryu Karate (4yrs)

Volunteerism:
SPCA Humane Society, Hospital Volunteer, various school functions

Dynamite Essay

The kid who wrote my peer evaluation is a blooming William Faulkner; she really highlighted my successes in classics.

I have teacher evaluations from my Latin and English teachers.

Thank you!

No.

Your test scores are mediocre for Yale, and you’re not in the first decile.

Chances= not very high.

you have decent chances. Try to get that calculus grade up and up that SAT score. Other than that, you are set.

My class rank shouldn’t matter too much in this case, considering that the size of my high school class is so small compared to others; my school technically doesn’t rank anyway. Stick me in a public school and I’m top 5% easy.

My SAT I score could be better, but it’s at least at the bottom of the range of scores of kids accepted last year.

I’m different! How many classics kids are there? I’ll at least stand out.

Don’t forget this is Yale, one of the best schools in the world. Yale gets many classics kids easy every year. There are many other places with better math/science programs than Yale so the geniuses in those areas may not even apply to Yale, a traditionally humanities heavy school. The fact is that they very well may encounter a classics kid with better grades and SAT scores than you, so don’t get your hopes up too high.

If you’re going to argue with the chances you get, why would you make a chance thread?

Haha I’m going to have to concur with what christiansoldier just said. Why make a chance thread to argue with the people who give you chances?

Your chances are extremely slim, not in top decile of class, lower end for SAT scores and your SAT II scores are extremely low. And the perception that being a classics major will make you stand out is misguided as well.

I suggest taking a look at the Yale 2014 SCEA Decisions thread and comparing yourself to the actual applicants.

I’m sorry, I just don’t like what you all are saying (but this is no excuse for me to argue with you). I appreciate your comments!

that’s reality. deal with it. we all have in some point of our lives.

Yes, that’s why I apologized.

I would just increase your SAT IIs, if not your SAT! Don’t worry, Yale admissions is a crapshoot and I have basically similar stats—I wasn’t outright rejected for the EA round so there’s some scrap of hope :]

“My class rank shouldn’t matter too much in this case, considering that the size of my high school class is so small compared to others”

Your rank certainly DOES matter, and your school being small has absolutely nothing to do with it. More than 95% of kids at Yale are in the first decile, and those that aren’t likely have some sort of hook or go to insanely good schools (Andover, Exeter, etc) where kids get into Ivies without being in the top 10%. You are clearly ignorant about how difficult it is to get into a place like Yale without being in the top 10% of your class, never mind the top few students altogether.

“Stick me in a public school and I’m top 5% easy”

That’s pure speculation and, quite frankly, somewhat arrogant of you to say; your stats suggest otherwise.

Haha ya while The Government sounded a bit mean above, he is absolutely correct. If you arent hooked, your chances at HYPS are pritty much nonexistant. I mean both your SAT 2s are below 700 and your rank isnt in top 10%. That said, I think if might try a few “lower” top 20 schools. Cornell is about the most competitive school you’d have a shot at.

Your tests scores are too low to get into Yale. The good news is that is what I got on my SAT score and I was admitted. The difference is that I never submitted my SAT scores to Yale I sent in only my ACT, which Yale alone among HYP allows you to do.

So my advice is to definitely take the ACT and study like crazy for it. Because I got your SAT score but got a 34 on the ACT.

i think a lot depends on your essays and the area you’re from (both of which probably helped me get in; i’m by no means your ideal applicant), but your odds are long. :frowning: is there some way you could take the ACT and just submit that? a 560 in math II/2070 on the SAT is below average for Y. plus, the rank will hurt, especially in a competitive school with many other (possibly better) applicants.

fyi, you don’t need a peer evaluation for yale. and like tristan said, the classics angle won’t really help, as there are plenty of classics applicants at yale, many of whom are likely VERY qualified.

are you from a coast or city?

@ Tres Elephantes (I like your username): I feel comfortable with saying that my essays are more than decent  Of course, what do I know! I’m not even in the top decile of my class.

I needed a peer evaluation for another school and then posted a thread about my chances for said school (and then copied and pasted the chance stats into this thread). I didn’t send a peer evaluation to Yale!

I’ve already sent in my SAT scores. If i take the ACT and score well, will that save me?

I’m from a big city in TX.

Sorry, I misspelled your username

Magan,
As Dbate and others have suggested, try taking the ACT.

Also you said “Stick me in a public school and I’m top 5% easy”, and the Government response was spot on. The Government said "That’s pure speculation and, quite frankly, somewhat arrogant of you to say; your stats suggest otherwise.

For your sake, work on eliminating any type of arrogance, however subtle in your essays.

Good Luck!

I’d say that Yale is a very high reach for you. Your test scores are really low and you don’t have any good hooks.
