Please be honest!

Hi!

Please be TOTALLY HONEST!!!

does Amherst have a reputation for being “stuck up”?

is there an overwhelming amount of females in the socially because of the two women colleges near?

do students stay on campus during weekends even though Boston and NYC are so close??

Thanks! I have to choose between Amherst and Grinnell by May 1st I dont know what to do!!!

No, Amherst students are not “stuck up.” You would be hard pressed to know who comes from a very wealthy family, and who is on full FA.

No, the place is not overrun by girls. Some might come over for parties on the weekends, but not in droves by any means.

I’ve never heard from my D that kids flock to the cities on the weekends. I’m sure kids that live in Boston or New York may go home on occasion for something specific, but other than that the campus remains the same on weekends.

It the campus was “stuck up” my D2 would hate it at Amherst. And she loves it there!

Make up you’re mind based on academics and the strength of their respective departments not on vague stereotypes. You should have fun in college but you’re priority is to learn. LEARN!

CPG: D is in same position as you, between Amherst and Grinnell (with some Carleton and Bryn Mawr thrown in). Leans Grinnell due to money (large scholarship, not finaid) and, amazingly, finds it not as isolated (less than an hour from Des Moines airport, with school shuttles v. plane change plus huge drive to Amherst).

As for kids, she found student body to be similar at both. Maybe a little more esoteric at Grinnell and Carleton than Amherst, but that may be the midwestern vibe. I agree that you can’t go wrong with either. I would look at the programs offered, how many students actually get to participate in travel, etc., whether the school subsidizes internships, and grad school placement (because, face it, if you are going to one of these places it is a likelihood). Good luck–we gave D until Monday to decide!

Have you been to visit them? How did you feel when you were there? Did one give you more money or is one better in what you want to major in or willing to do more in the way of internship etc…?
