Hi I'm a junior at a competitive high school and i don't know very much about the college process or rankings because my school doesn't disclose them, so it's hard to know where I stand. I am passionate about studying engineering and am very interested in Brown and Cornell, could you please chance me, and maybe even suggest some other schools?

-idk if this is something i could include, but i sew clothing a lot. i make unique shirts and skirts and stuff, and i sell them to friends and other kids, each piece unique. i might take pictures of my creations and include them in my art portfolio?

please chance me! i'll chance back if you explain how (i just made this :) )

i’d say you have a great chance at cornell, especially with those ECs. brown is sort of a reach for everyone, but it looks like you have a pretty good chance; maybe try to get your sat up a little?

I haven’t read the whole profile, but you seem to be a competitive candidate.

Better SAT/ACT score is good. But don’t take it too many times. Once is ideal and the earlier the better. I’d say take more Subject tests.
just keep it up! you’re in a great shape!

Why are you so cool? Female + engineering + art + craftsy things. You sound like an amalgamation of all my best friends.

You’re doing quite well in the things that are hardest to change in a short time span and hardest to fake (extracurriculars and grades). At this point, besides maintaining your grades, I’d recommend pulling up your standardized test scores (2300+ for the SAT, maybe 35 for the ACT). Brown strongly emphasizes SAT scores, and I do believe they even have a score breakdown on their website on the percentage of kids in different points ranges on the SAT they admitted.

Line up your recommendation-letter teachers now. Approach them near the end of your junior year (around the post-AP-tests time). And also, as far as rankings go: ask your counselor. Just ask. At my school the information wasn’t provided by default but the counselors were happy to let you know.

Draft essays over the summer. If you’re a confirmed fantastic writer you can punch out some great ones during the school year. If you’re not confirmed fantastic (when it comes to writing about yourself, specifically) then start early and think hard about how you want to package yourself in your application and essays, what parts of your personality or your activities do you want to emphasize, what quirky traits you want to bring to light that make you more than just an overachiever kid. You’ve got an interesting meld of activities and interests.

You have very strong chances at both (honestly I’d say very likely at Cornell and unsurprising/quite possible with Brown), so it really comes down to how well you can sell yourself as a compelling future freshman.

TASP will be extraordinary. Good luck.

thanks a lot everyone i really appreciate it! :)

It’s hard to evaluate you without an UW GPA, here is how you calculate it: A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0 (I assume it doesn’t go lower). I assume you know how to average from there. If your UW GPA is reasonable (3.9+ish) then I would say Cornell and Brown are about low reaches. Cornell only looks at your M + CR on the SAT by the way. What type of engineering are you interested in specifically? I did a lot of searching into good chem e schools this year, so I could probably give some suggestions.

“could you…maybe even suggest some other schools?”

Would you please add Smith to your list? They have an engineering program that I’ve heard is good, and if you like being around smart women, it’s the place to be!

hi thanks! i’m not really sure what type of engineering yet, because i don’t have enough knowledge/experience of the specific fields to be sure. i’d love any suggestions though!
& I’ve heard great things about Smith, I’ll look into it

Barnard! They don’t have an engineering program, but its an amazing women’s college, and you sound like a really good fit. It would be a high match/low reach for you.

Pretty good! I’d say you have a good shot at Cornell. As someone else said, Brown’s always gonna be a reach for anyone. But apply! You just might get in. Chance me back! I’m a girl interested in engineering as well.

thanks everyone! really, brown before cornell? and what do you all think about my chances at upenn against those other 2 schools? just visited, and love it :)
