I hesitate to do to do this but the anxiety is getting pretty severe and I'd love some peace of mind (or an easy let down) before EA decisions come out.

ESSAYS
Common App: One of the best essays I've ever written. I'm very happy with it.
Supplement: Good, not prolific

RECOMMENDATIONS
Social Studies (This one should hopefully be pretty good; the teacher who wrote it knows me well and I've stayed in contact with her even when she moved. She is very well-spoken so I think I can count on it being quality.)
Math (Should be good, I don't know for sure about this one but I don't foresee this as being my downfall)

OTHER
-Will graduate with 13 AP/IB credits
- IB Diploma Candidate (I think I'll get the diploma)
- Fluent in German, semi-fluent in Russian

Thanks so much! I hope this was thorough enough!

Honestly, I think you’ll get in. The only thing I see is maybe your class rank not being in the top 10%, but your test scores are really good for instate applicants. Good luck!

Everything looks solid but I would be a bit concerned about your class rank and unweighted GPA. Obviously the courses have been stong enough to bring your weighted average to greater than the all important 4.5 mark. The balance of your profile looks quite strong, especially for an in-state applicant.

Best of luck to you. It won’t be long now…

Other than class rank, you’re quite a standout student for in state. If your school is particularly prestigious (and I’m guessing it is, considering your scores and your still not in hThe top 10%) then I don’t think your class rank will hurt you.

Guessing around ~95% chance of admission.

I’m an idiot and only got 1 teacher recommendation. Should be at least decent.
5 on AP LANG and AP Stats, 4 on APUSH
Decent essays, both incorporated my love of animals, one was about my failure as an animal carekeeper when my African ropefish jumped out of his too-small tank to his demise, making me feel awful. Not sure why I told all that information. His name was Ching-Chong.
Pitiful, awful, crappiest of the crap ECs. Seriously. Nada
I don’t volunteer very much. But I’m ranked 25th in the world in Injustice! (Video game)

Yaaaaaaaaay. Will my total lack of being a decent human being screw with my chances? That’s what I’m worried about.

Severage,

Thanks so much! I feel a lot better now.

As for you:
Your stats are obviously great. As someone else on here said, 4.5 seems to be the weighted GPA to reach and you did it. Unweighted is also stellar; you’re clearly an excellent student. I know they say SAT isn’t an indicator of intelligence but it is definitely a good way to gauge critical thinking skills. I think UNC will see your SAT as a sign that you are an intelligent person and not just able to get good grades. Male is also a great asset with UNC (from what I’ve heard), as unfair as that may sound. I think your essay about the fish sounds like a great way to show the admissions committee who you are! It sounds like it had a good amount of humor sprinkled in as well (in spite of it being a sad event). ECs are great to have obviously but I don’t think your lack of them is going to kill your chances. Since you have such good stats, they may recognize that you’re more of a scholar and respect you for it. You clearly have a passion for animals which they may even see as a sort of quasi-extracurricular. I don’t like to put a number to these things but since you did, I will do my best. Considering your great numbers and resume, I would guess around 90% chance of admission. Keep in mind that I’m definitely not an authority but I hope this gave you a more objective look at your application, as your reply gave me (thanks again by the way). I hope I see you at UNC next year!

EDIT:
I see you added some more info about yourself: top 5% is amazing! I can only imagine being that highly ranked! I don’t think only having one rec will do you in; they may appreciate your saving them time.

Awesome! Thanks for the elaborate feedback. I’m really counting on my scores as well…

I was expecting a decision this friday. Since we arent getting one, the wait is even more unbearable…

Severage,

99% chance of admission. 1% if someone in the admissions committee is having a bad day:-) Your numbers are solid.

The problem is that my junior year grades were not that great. Accordingly, I dropped from top 1% to top 4%:-(. I explained in an essay that I just felt like I studied for the wrong test for one of my courses. It happens.
Solid Recommendation letters, I believe.

Thanks for your input

Really, what is the big deal about class rank? I have a 3.9 UW with many honors and 7AP and I am "only "in the top 17%. I am from Georgia and the colleges here don’t even look at rank, realizing you can’t compare across high schools.
You instate people with good gpa and decent ec’s are probably golden with anything above a 1900 SAT/28ACT.

@severage, this guy goes to my school, and class ranks are ridiculous. I’m in the same boat as you are: good scores (36 ACT) but poor GPA (4.36), and my rank is bad too (130th).
@worried, hi. Glad to see people I know here too; I’m not insane. I would be shocked if you didn’t get into UNC. Plus, I think you deserve it, given the fact that you’ve worked your ass off on a lot of stuff. You deserve it much, much more than I do.

Thing is, I’m worried about my GPA not being 4.5. I even got a 5.85 weighted this semester, but if they outright reject me and not defer me, I’ll be the saddest.

Hi @illiriks,

Fancy meeting you here! As for you, I don’t think you should be terribly worried about your GPA. First of all, your ACT score is off the charts. I don’t think any college can ignore that. I know they say 4.5 is sort of the “UNC GPA” to have but that doesn’t mean they don’t accept people below that. You also have such a great asset, what with your impressive Debate Club history.

@everyone

I was also hoping for decisions to come out tomorrow… I guess we’ll just have to wait. Venting on this thread and getting some feedback is really, really therapeutic; I might just make it to the 31st

@worried and then you have to write your ee that weekend! Isn’t life just the best?

@CLG heh your numbers are very similar to mine. Much better weighted GPA though. And you’ve actually done something productive outside of school. You’re in…

I think that everyone who has posted stats on this thread has at least a fairly good chance of admission. We all have our weak areas, there are no perfect candidates! I definitely see notable strengths in all of you up there ^^^. Hoping for a little feedback on my stats too:

Female OOS, I attend a fairly large public high school (it was a national blue ribbon school my freshman year, idk if admissions people know that)
Class Rank: 4/360
Unweighted GPA: 4.0/4.0
Weighted GPA: 5.57/6.0
SAT: 2210 (CR 760, W 750, M 700)
SAT II: Math II- 770 US History- 720
I’ve taken a total of 10 AP classes for 11 credits (this year one of the five AP classes I take is AP bio, which counts for 2 credits)
Three season athlete all four years (field hockey then track the rest of the year)
Captain of JV field hockey sophomore year and Varsity senior year
First Chair flute
National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society exec board
I have quite a few community service hours: I went to Costa Rica on a service learning trip, I tutor immigrants in the basics of English, I worked at the nurses station at Johns Hopkins, I assemble meals at Moveable Feast, etc.
Work Experience: I started a camp for field hockey players in my neighborhood, we had a very successful turnout and the Baltimore Sun wrote a story on the camp. I also worked as an office clerk in the pulmonary wing of Johns Hopkins
Letters of rec: Both of my teacher ones were good, don’t know about the guidance one but its probably good too
Awards: Scholar Athlete, Timonium Optimist Award, AP Scholar with Honor, Peabody Chorus Performance Award, Honorable Mention in Hollins University Poetry Contest

I would appreciate any feedback, I’m definitely feeling the anxiety as UNC is my top choice! Thanks!

@creuland Well I’m obviously not an admissions officer but you seem like the kind of candidate colleges would fight for. I know you’re OOS which makes it harder to say but you have a perfect 4.0, a weighted GPA higher than the skies and a class rank that some people at my school would kill for. Everything else just sweetens the deal. I don’t know what to say other than that if you were in state, you would have a 110% chance of getting in. OOS is trickier but I think you’re still at the top of the pool, even that of out of state applicants. Good luck and I hope to meet you at Chapel Hill!

Chance me: I’m a Caucasian male OOS student (NJ resident) attending a prestigious boarding school in PA. Applying for Political Science major

GPA: 3.35 UW (3.2 freshman year, 3.3 soph, 3.6 junior, 3.4 senior), 3.9 weighted (3.4 frosh, 3.6 soph, 4.4 junior, 4.2 senior to date)

SAT: 2070 (710 CR, 730 M, 630 W)
ACT: 31 (English: 35, Reading: 33, Math: 29, Science: 27)
SAT IIs: US History: 720; Math I: 690
APs: Human Geography (5); English Language & Composition (3, as a sophomore); US History (5); Statistics (taking this year)
IBs: Math Studies SL (7); Spanish B SL (5); taking Economics SL and English A, History of the Americas, and Biology HL exams this year

Extra Curriculars:
-Student Council Vice President (I was Secretary last year and a class representative my freshman and sophomore years)
-JSA President/Co-President for two years (I’m a 4 year member and was Secretary my sophomore year)
-Model UN (4 year member)
-Close to 300 hours of Community Service (200 hours volunteering at an inner-city youth program plus 88 hours volunteering at a school on the Navajo reservation for my school service project)
-Freshman orientation counselor (overnight for a week in August)
-Summer job at a poolside cafe for past 3 years
-JV Football manager in grades 10 & 11
-Cooking Club co-leader (and member in grade 10)

My essay is solid and my recommendations should be outstanding (from my counselor, APUSH teacher, and Math Studies/AP Stats teacher).

What are my chances?

@GADTGS2014, your GPA is not quite up to par. Test scores aren’t stellar but acceptable. EC’s are also somewhat weak; UNC looks for at least 400 volunteer hours (son had ~430, denied last year w/4.8 weighted GPA). I’d say ~15%, especially since OOS
