Please chance me on BU, Northeastern University, and American University

Wondering if any of you could tell me about the political science/government programs at Northeastern, BU, American, and my shot of getting in.

I'm American (Caucasian, half Italian-American) originally from Boston, but currently living in Beijing, China. I've lived overseas here since 5th grade. From what I'm told this experience itself gives me some diversity from other applicants.

I'm a Junior and attending an international school where we take the International Baccalaureate, which is known by colleges to be more challenging than US High School Courses. The problem is it is grades 1 through 7 (7 being the highest), so I am not sure of my GPA. I currently have one or two 7s, several 6's and 5's. I take three Higher levels and credits can be received for grades 5s, 6s, and 7s in those HL courses.

My PSAT scores are fairly average with a 1840. I will be taking the SAT in May and the ACTs at some point.

Currently I am a three varsity sport athlete in Baseball, Basketball, and Soccer. However I am not good enough at any of them to have a chance at playing D1. This is pretty much the extent of my ECs. I am in the equivalent of the sports booster club, trying to build school spirit and organizing events/fundraisers. While also writing pieces to keep the school informed about our teams. I did year book my freshman and sophomore years.

Let me know if you think I stand a shot, or how I can improve my chances.

those schools are currently low reaches, but if you can get the SAT score and GPA significantly higher they can become matches. it’s hard to know without any solid numbers though

Hi! Both Northeastern and AU have outstanding political science offerings. American is in a top location, and one of most politically active, i mean…hello…DC!!! And so many internships. It’s a smaller community as well, therefore you’re not JUSt a number.

What really caught me on to your post is that you live in beijing, China!!! How cool! I lived in Beijing for my junior year, studying abroad and Chinese with a program called School Year Abroad. I loved every second of Beijing, just so much to do! Okay, on to the next topic (just wanted to share that)…btw, I’m a Senior now.

I think your chances to get into either AU or Northeastern is not too hard. The thing is, AU is my first choice so I applied ED, which I believe increases the chance of being admitted. However, with Northeastern I was also accepted and I was so excited! There was no supplement required so it was an easy application.

I actually have lived in Germany my whole life besides my year in China and I think those two really made me different from others and made me stand out. Especially studying abroad as an 11th grader.

Because I’m not graduating from a school in the United States, I didn’t have to send in my SAT/ACT scores for American University. And they don’t hold it against you. Therefore I didn’t send it in. But my scores were pretty average, nothing too special, and I got into Northeastern. But then again, it’s a big school so the acceptance pool is bigger.

I actually suggest you apply to all your top schools early action - it’s non binding. And if you get in, wonderful, and if not your application goes into the regular decision pool.
So you pretty much get two chances.

You definitely stand a shot. Sports are great, but do something in the community. Everyone can play a sport…but it’s also your essay that will have to stand out. I hope I helped!!! Feel free to message me privately (if it works). I’d be happy to be of any further help!!! :)
