I am a rising sophomore at a top 50 liberal arts college

College GPA: 3.93
Credits: 4.5 (first semester) + 5 (second semester) + 4 (AP) + 6 (this coming fall)= 19.5
Major: Political Science (already have 4 credits and will earn another 2 credits next semester)
SAT: 2190 (800M+730W+660CR. sigh..)
SAT2: 800 Math Level 2; 750 USH; 730 Physics
Ethnicity: Asian

What is my chance to transfer to Cornell?

I am confident with my college performance since my college is top 50 in the nation and my GPA is solid.
But I am kinda worried about my SAT. Should I retake it?

SAT seems fine, and probably won’t make too much of a difference considering your solid gpa from a top school, and the fact that you’re a transfer.

Does your school do credits differently, or do you really only take a couple of classes each semester?

The way that my school (and i think most liberal arts colleges) is doing with credits is that 1 course = 1 credit (as opposed to 3 or 4 credits in research universities). Maybe a clearer to say about my current situations is that I have taken 4.5 classes during the first semester and 5 classes during the second, and will take 6 classes next semester.

Thank you for the chance! I was freaking out about my SAT grades because people always told me that you needed a 2300 to get in an ivy and now i guess I can focus more on the why transfer essay!

top 50 liberal arts school will only help if it has a reputation for grade deflation/being really difficult. Transfers honestly stand better chances coming from state/community. Top 50 lc? nowhere near top 15 Univesity.

SATs are fine. You need to kind of have a theme to your whole application and why your theme is better for cornell’s x college than your lc.

Theme: I want to be an engineer and help design environmentally friendly stuff. I did preservation work, was on a robotics team, and you wrote your main essay on y endangered species and it’s impact on your life. Your transfer essay is how Cornell can help you, and what you would give to the Cornell community (just as important!).

I transferred to Cornell ILR after my sophomore year. While transfer chances very widely depending on the college you want to transfer into, your stats are solid. I wouldn’t worry about the SATs - they count less for transfers since they are only an indicator of what your performance in college should be like (and you’ve performed well so it doesnt matter).

Application will matter significantly including your “why this college/major” portion. Good luck.

@kate244 Thank you so much!! It was really helpful. My why transfer essay was about i want to pursue a phd degree in political theory and i am particularly interested in a few theorists and scholars but none of them is taught in my LAC because there is only one political theory professor (untenured) in my LAC and her research interest is more in medieval etc. I don’t feel that my why transfer is as impressive as the environmental/engineering example you gave me. But I feel that my application is getting okay now … Also, with regard to GPA deflation … The average GPA of my class is around 3.1; i am not sure if there is a threshold average GPA or not to define GPA inflation problem, but my ranking in my class (# 12 out of 200+ students) won’t hurt me even if there is GPA inflation in my current institution ;)) Thank you so much for the points and help!!

@Jay1020 Thank you! Since I have registered October SAT last month, i will take it anyway. But i will definitely focus on my transfer essays while maintaining a solid GPA next semester. Hope my transfer would succeed. Thank you!
