Just curious, why are some schools that I’m in the 75th percentile+ for the ACT and around 50th percentile+ for GPA (the one that includes freshmen year even) do you put as a reach?

As for the reason why most of them are reach even if you’re in the grade range, it’s because the top schools in the US don’t just look for grades. Plus, it’s also kind of a shot in the dark because you can get rejected by them even if you have 4.0 with 2400. Your essays are probably just as important as your grades, and the essay is always a factor that you can’t really be sure on.

Very sad about the personal hardships that you had to get through, but the university will probably disregard that unless you write it in your essay. Take the SATs and do well in this year and you’ll have a good chance to most of the universities. Good luck!

@wannabefeynman

I will be mentioning the one about my brother in my essay since it really changed me as a person and also ties into the suicide awareness program I brought into my school. I talked to an admissions officer at washU and he said that if my counselor mentions the reasons for my bad freshmen year as legitament (which she will), that they’ll more or less look past my freshmen year. Is this incorrect?

Thanks

What’s incorrect about that? It’s perfectly valid as long as the university agrees and it’s true. You suffered from a very unfortunate incident which obviously affected your mark. But really, universities barely look at your freshmen or even sophomore year.

@wannabefeynman

Could you possibly chance me? I would greatly appreciate it!

Your ECs are good considering the amount you raised. Your statistics are also good - just score 2100+ on SAT I and 30+ on the Act and you should be able to get into many of those schools. Good luck!

@wannabefeynman

Got a 32 on the act
