u need something outstanding - ur well-rounded, but maybe not well-rounded enuff. well-lopsided is better.

THANK YOu..but tell me..how should ibe more "well rounded"?

by more well-rounded, i mean not by trying to do lots more extracurriculars (plus you shouldn't do that...you should only do what you like to do), but getting stronger in each of those....like going regional, statewide ..or becoming president (if you feel comfortable) of one of the clubs.

by well-lopsided, i mean like doing someting uberly uberly great in just one or two of those (e.g. placing 5th nationally in debate or something)

I find it a bit disheartening when posters insist on posting "the numbers" before posting what makes them unique. I'm always unconvinced as to why anyone here should care how good your scores are, and am usually tempted to scroll through "the numbers" in search of something actually worth remembering.

Keep in mind: the time it takes to look over someone's grades/scores is but a fraction of the time it takes to read essays and recommendations--you know, the things that actually make you stand out.

But, yes, to the OP, your numbers are good enough. But the rest . . . I agree with the above poster. Something outstanding--however you want to define the word--would be nice. But only if you can convince the admissions committee of why it's so darn outstanding.

Don't you guys think there are too many B's for Harvard, seriously???

Nah. The freshman B's are slightly excusable. Adcoms understand that it takes some students a little while to adjust. After that the B's are sporadic, and the Bs in AP Chem won't necessarily be frowned upon if the nature of the course is taken into consideration. There's an upward trend, overall.

But, of course, you can't be straight As . . .

you can't be a merit finalist

California is right--they don't notify us about being finalists until 2005. Semi-finalist'll have to do for the apps!

no, that isn't what i meant, although sunglasses is right as well. this person is a junior, which means he/she hasn't even received his/her PSAT scores yet. i love it when people waste their time like this...

Haha. We seniors aren't even National Merit Finalists yet, haha.

I also think it's hillarious how you've already predicted your AP scores and second semester grades, even though the first semester isn't even over yet.

Overall, your complete lack of meaningful awards and better-than-average-but-still-not-great EC's combined with subpar grades makes you an easy rejection. Still, you've got a shot, I guess.

Edit: Oh, meant rejection from Harvard, not everywhere.

UC Berkel*e*y- Accept on the basis of scores
UCLA- Accept on the basis of scores
Stanford- Rejection
Harvard- Rejection
Columbia- Tossup-ish
NYU- Accept
Yale- Rejection

Just my predictions.

to the op: i'm sure you've heard this before...but just apply..!!...and please for god's sake people stop predicting rejections...you are no authority...and you have no right to be discouraging someone so blatantly...

Shjanama, what you just said makes absolutely no sense.

He wants to know his chances, but I have no authority to tell him what I think? I can only give him positive comments?

Look, I'm no authority, and if he doesn't want to listen to me, he doesn't have to. I have never once stated that I am an authority on the subject. I'm just throwing my opinion out in the air, and he can do whatever he wants with it.

Also, I never told him to not apply. I think he's got enough of a shot to apply, but not enough to EXPECT anything but a rejection. There's a difference.

The OP is only getting what s/he asked for . . .

sorry..maybe i'm just in a terrible mood right now...but i'm tired of people telling other people that they are going to get rejected...AS IF they know anything about the process...i know of all kinds of people being accepted by schools like harvard...precisely why i don't think asking random people for chances is such a good idea...even though i've done it before myself...again...i didn't mean to attack YOU..nor am i telling you to just give positive comments...but saying 'you'll be rejected' is wrong...because you don't know!!!...i just don't think one can comment on such an issue w/out being an adcom member...

I never said "you WILL be rejected" because I'm in no position to make that call. Why would I tell him to apply if I felt he were that bad?

First of all, he's still got an entire year to do something incredible, but I'm saying that if he stays with what he's got, it is VERY LIKELY he will be rejected.

I am an Asian too, so I'm not trying to be racist, but you sound very much like a typical Asian. Too much.

The portfolio? High scores but not necessarily high grades. Violin. Volunteering. And, most importantly, nothing outstanding.

These kids get rejected by the dozen, and all I'm saying is that's he's fitting the picture almost exactly. Trust me, there are a few kids at my school every year with stats very similar to the OP's. They have all gotten rejected from all of HYPMS. Every last one.

Edit: Actually, I take it back. There was one of these Asian stereotypes who got into Princeton RD with nothing really spectacular going for him, but he was 1600/4.0 and had taken plenty of AP's.

i suppose there isn't much point arguing over this since our opinions differ ..don't think i'm personally attacking you because i'm not...and i didn't mean to imply that you are racist either...

its alright, i only asked for opinons, dont fight over this. I do beleive ubercollegeman is correct. i do have meaningless awards..think about, only awards given out my mayor, geez, dats total crap, and meaningless EC's dat i have will do crap for me. YEa, mister uber is correct. WEll, i was hoping at least to UCLA for i live in LA..HAHA, i was just tryign to see if Stanford or HArvard was a possibility. Hey, imuh apply any way, u never know until you try

Thanks for taking the comments so well and maturely. Not everyone does, heh.

Like I said, don't worry about UCLA/Berkeley. You'll get into both on nearly scores alone. You'll need to do something else for HYPS though, because applicants like you to those schools are a dime a dozen.

i appreciate your honesty and comments. I see that now my goals are to stand out in the application process.
