Please Explain the Greek System?

So, I'm not entirley (or even partly) sure as to how to how the whole Greek system works.
Do you have to apply (rush) for a frat, and what do you do?

Then how do you get selected. And do you have to be Greek?

And say you are not in the frat, and your freshmen year starts, how does one go to Greek Parties?? And is it easy to make friends here?

Thanks

In spring of your freshman year or later, you can rush. There is a short application you have to submit to the Greek Life office to “put your name in the hat,” so to speak, for rush.

Then, during the rush period, the fraternities have different social events so you can meet the brothers and they can meet you, evaluating your personality and how you interact with the brothers. The brothers will then meet and talk about the rushees and which ones they wish to give bids. On bid night, the brothers go around and invite the individuals to join their fraternity. If you accept the bid, there is then a pledge process before you’re a full-fledged member.

By no means do you have to be Greek. Regarding Greek parties, they are usually advertised around campus on fliers. I’ve heard that sometimes it’s a little harder for males to get into Greek parties their second semester if they don’t rush, but I don’t think it’s really that big of a deal, especially if you have friends in the fraternity. If you go Greek or not, you should have plenty of opportunities to make friends.

Also, if you plan on participating in recruitment, make sure you do well first semester. To take part in recruitment you need a certain GPA, and then each fraternity & sorority has a different minimum GPA requirement.

“And say you are not in the frat, and your freshmen year starts, how does one go to Greek Parties?? And is it easy to make friends here?”

During orientation week & the first month or so of school, you can get a ride to parties all the time. Fraternities do shuttles to and from freshmen dorms and a lot of on campus parties are held. It’s really easy to go to these.

During the first semester you bond a lot with the people on your hall and it’s really easy to make friends. My hall did this thing called “Speed Dating” where they put the girls in a big circle and the boys in a smaller circle inside the bigger circle, and you’d talk to someone and then rotate. That way you get to meet everyone on the boy’s/girl’s side of the hall.

thanks (10char)

I know I shouldn’t rely on that site but I heard about it from a friend and went on it to see what the people at Wake Forest were like. Honestly I was appalled. The people seem to be gossipy, cocky, and rude. There were people ‘dissing’ those who weren’t involved in the greek system. Also, there were a few post about how people hated Wake and wanted to transfer.

Can anyone tell me if this is true about the majority of people on campus? Do people tend to be disrespectful. Are people rude to you if you aren’t involved in the greek like? Do people usually not enjoy their time at wake?

Thanks!

CollegeACB is really not representative of the Wake population at all, IMO. I think it’s really just a select few (that are mostly greek) that have nothing better to do but gossip about people.

If you go on any schools CollegeACB’ site it is going to be less than flattering. The sorts of degenerates that actively post on that site are certainly not indicative of Wake Forest University’s students.

Thanks!"

CollegeACB is literally the worst place to go for information about this. 99% of the people at Wake absolutely despise its existence. That site seriously survives on about 5 people who post to it and about 30 people defending themselves.

“Can anyone tell me if this is true about the majority of people on campus?”

NO! Absolutely not.

“Do people tend to be disrespectful”

Not at all. Most people here have what I’d consider traditional Southern manners – open doors for girls, please/thank you, that type of thing.

“Are people rude to you if you aren’t involved in the greek like?”

There are some people who are. Most people don’t care. Lots of unaffiliated people hang out with Greek people. It’s really not a big deal at all. Some people make it out to be a HUGE deal – these people are usually sour grapes about the recruitment process or just like to stir the pot.

“Do people usually not enjoy their time at wake?”

If people didn’t like Wake, we wouldn’t be #28 and we’d have a whole lot more transfers  People who do not like something are always much more vocal than people who do.

Do not waste your time on CollegeACB. You’re just giving the site even more viewers. If I could eliminate any site off of the internet, I’d pick that one.

That’s great to hear. Thanks so much!
