Prompt: Does improvement or progress usually involve a significant drawback or problem of some kind?
Humans have a love for improvements and progress. Despite aiming to improve, we have a tendency to create a disadvantage instead. Improvement or progress always involves a significant drawback or problem of some kind. Many examples in history corroborate this truth.
As demonstrated by the invention of the atomic bomb, our progress created a problem. The progress of the Manhattan Project led to the creation of the atomic bomb. During World War II, the United States needed a stalwart way to eliminate Germany's greatest ally, the Japanese. The attack on Pearl Harbor made the Japanese threat prominent across the nation. As a result, the decision was made to unleash the new weaponry. The effect on Japan was devastating. Millions died because of the progress of the Manhattan project. Therefore, progress and improvement in weapon power caused a major problem in Japan. It took decades to rebuild their country.
Industrialization in the 1800s depicts how progress creates problems. The industrial movement catalyzed the economy, improved the technology and catapulted a new of life. However, these improvements came with setbacks. As more people moved to cities to work in factories, urban areas became overpopulated. Most areas became disease carrying slums. Also, industrialization led to the rise in child labor. Factories needed more workers to fulfill their maximum potential. Thus, children were hired to operate dangerous machines while getting drastically underpaid. Hence, the improvements overall cancelled out with the negatives that were brought with them.
In the 1970s, Vietnam had an overwhelming deer population. In an effort to control the population, the government introduced wolves, a natural deer predator to the environment. This event proves that improvement involves a drawback or problem of some kind. Due to the vast amount of deer, the wolves had an abundance of prey to hunt. They rarely ran out of food. As a result, as deer population decreased, wolves population grew exponentially. Although the Vietnam government solved an issue, it created a new one. The government needed to find a new way to eliminate a certain specie's population effectively.
After a careful analysis of the progress of the Manhattan project, the industrial movement of the 1800s. and the introduction of wolves in Vietnam, improvement or progress indeed involves a significant drawback or problem. Although improvement and progress are necessary for evolution, humans need to find a way to reduce the amount of harmful mishaps.
