I am a rising senior who is completely lost in the whole college admissions and payment for college. I have a 3.3 UW GPA (3.0 Fresh, 3.406 Soph, and 3.5 Junior). I have been practicing for the act all summer and I am averaging a 28-30 on all of the sections up from a 22 composite my first attempt. I have 0 involvement in school (No ECS, No volunteer, no awards, no sports.)

Please assume this when i apply: 3.3 UW GPA, 28-30 ACT, Applying to B schools. If I got a 3.8 First tri of senior year...how would this look?

ECS I by myself outside of school

I was born in Togo, I go to an OK public high (easy), Mom has a GED; Father has master's from Hamline. Still he really doesn't know much about the proccess and neither does my mom. Counselor is not easy to reach since I have to leave class and she has 100-200 other students as well. Income is <50k with family of 6 including myself. What colleges should I be looking at? I live in MN

libbased, you will have some good options, but you have to think about what you want in your college experience. You will need significant financial aid, but your test scores need to deliver what the practice tests indicate, and your upward trending gpa and interesting extra-curriculars will help. Where (ie what part of the country) are you interested in studying in? There are hundreds of small, liberal arts colleges in the country that might fit the bill for you. Do you have a major in mind or are you open?

Do you have a good relationship with your college counselor and teachers who know you and can write recommendations for you? See if you can meet with your counselor during the first couple of weeks of school to get some advice. That relationship will be critical for you.

Go to the college board “Big Future” college search engine, plug in your statistics and other characteristics you’d like in a college and see what comes of it. Look at those schools’ financial aid policies, and start talking to your parents about financial aid forms like the FAFSA, which goes online Jan. 1 and will be critical for you. If they know what information they’ll have to provide, they can be ready when the forms are.

Go to Commonapp.org, register, and begin filling out the common application and begin working on an essay before school starts, because your first semester grades are going to be important. Try to get as much paperwork done before school starts as you can, then get some help from your counselor or an english teacher on your essay draft after school starts.

Send your counselor an email and set up a couple of appts. Seeing your counselor at the beginning of senior year is a higher priority than class.

I’d like to study anywhere really. I’d like a big student body, liberal political views, good football with a very god business program. Location should be in an urban setting or a small urban setting with good night life. I like UW madison, Umich, Penn state, UT Austin and NYU so far. I don’t think I can afford any since I am OOS without going into debt. I like schools that can help me get a job when i graduate…eventually I would like to work in marketing, preferably in the video game industry. As for the counselor, I will get intouch asap. Thanks for the replies, but any other schools that would take me?

The obvious choice is the wonderful U Minn - Twin Cities, who have great business and marketing programs.

Next up, consider the reciprocity schools for MN, including Wisconsin:
[Minnesota-Wisconsin Tuition Reciprocity Application — HEAB](<a href=“404 Page Not Found”>404 Page Not Found)

I agree that connecting and meeting with your counselor is the wise way to proceed. Let the counselor know your college intentions and be sure to point out your upward trend.
The counselor will be responsible for submitting your transcripts in a timely manner, so be sure to be clear about what it is that you need and when.

Next, be sure to keep a close eye on all deadlines and requirements, then submit your applications to any OOS public’s accordingly.

OOS publics are highly unlikely to give you sufficient FA. In addition, you have some schools on your list that are notoriously expensive and unlikely to give you good aid, even if you could get in: Penn State and NYU. Your best bet financially would be a need-based school like Northwestern, but it would be a super-reach for you.

Luckily, you live in a state with good public options and a reciprocity agreement. You might also want to take a look at the list of schools with automatic awards, which is posted here periodically. Many of them would leave you with an unacceptably large amount to cover, though, and are unlikely to be as good as your state options.

I would add- starting a business as a EC activity? Also have you thought of taking the SAT? sometimes one does better on one test more than the other. I don’t enough about college choices for scholarships. Any instate options look good to you?

I should add that Babson is supposed to be a school for entrepreneurs, but I have no idea what their FA is like, nor do I know what kind of stats they are looking for.

Yes, MN has reciprocity with Wisconsin, so you could pay in state tuition at UW Madison (or other UW schools, I think). Your GPA is a low for acceptance there, but are you an underrepresented minority? If so that might improve your chances. Also agree that U of MN - Twin Cities could be good. The other choices you have listed are likely not going to be financially feasible. Honestly, you are likely to have to take out loans whereever you go, but MN or WI state schools will be less expensive.

I have no tried the SAT. But I think I would only have to practice for the math. So it narrows it to UW Madison (if I can get in) and UM Twin cities. I am a URM and are my ECS good enough?

both my D did very well on the SAT’s and not so good on the ACT’s- i am sure there is a logical reason - but they used their SAT scores when applying
