Also make sure you apply to a few safeties, that you can definitely be accepted to and your family can afford.
@mommdc I was really thinking that Purdue and Penn State would be my safeties, I don’t think my stats are that bad compared to their class profiles
@Gumbymom alright, thank you so much I will definitely look into it
Penn State should work instate with your $35k price range. How much is Purdue?
U Maryland might work, Drexel gives merit and has coop program, Ohio State would give you some merit.
Also you seem to be interested in business, thought of a business degree with minor in CS?
Carnegie Mellon is really good If you want a reach school for comp sci.
The UCs will be too expensive OOS.
@mommdc I actually was going for a major in CS with a minor in Business, I have never thought of doing the opposite…I was also thinking about adding university of maryland to my list, how about Virginia tech, would they offer me some money?
@andyis Carnegie mellon is a good option as well, but I do not know if they will accept me…their mid 50% range for their computer science is almost perfect for the SAT, ACT and GPA
Not sure about Virginia Tech, check for info on their website.
Just to summarize, it appears that Berkeley, UCLA, UT-Austin, UIUC, Purdue, and GA Tech are all out of state for you. $35,000 won’t cover the cost, and as an OOS student you won’t get need based aid.
I will take off the UCs because I guess that they are way to expensive even with a family income of 220k+
I am still very inclined towards GA Tech because my family and I have looked the closest into it and they are comfortable affording that
What would my chances be for GA Tech?
@Gumbymom @intparent @mommdc I understand that as parents, everybody is very concerned with the cost, which is very thoughtful of everybody and I definitely appreciate the responses. But if we just take the cost out of the equation for JUST a second, what are the realistic chances for me at all of the colleges that I stated above based on just my resume?
I do not think I will apply to the UCs now, because tbh my research on them is not very good, but I have researched the rest of those schools.
I realize that cost is definitely very, VERY important but where there is a will, there is a way…I just want to go to a good school and the cost is not something that will stop me from moving forward.
Provide the list again, has it changed since you posted.
@DrGoogle Sure, here it is:
Duke
GA Tech
U of Illinois - UC
Penn State Schreyer
Purdue
UT - Austin
please offer any other suggestions if you would like
The only one I see as a reach is Duke (and maybe GA tech? Not too familiar with it). I Think that your options are pretty realistic (at least if we look at the averages. Then again, maybe OOS is more competitive, but I don’t think it is by much). Are you looking into the honors colleges? I would consider it. Also, I would look into more schools that are match/reach to fill the vacancy left by the UCs. I’m not too sure about their comp sci but maybe look at USC
They are all good chances except Duke. Have you thought about Rice if you are going to pay OOS for Austin?
I think UIUC is very competitive in CS. UT-Austin is just tough OOS. Those and Duke are reaches.
I would suggest you run the net price calculators on all the remaining schools on your list so your parents can see the cost of each. You will find them on the financial aid webpage of each college. “Where there is a will there is a way” does not apply to college financing. we get students here every spring whose parents can’t or won’t pay for most of the schools they are accepted to.
UIUC CS is competitive but less so compare to other UCs like Berkeley. But it’s worth a try.
USC is also good for CS and business. Who knows you may change your mind and become industrial engineering major like my kid’s roommate, who graduated there with a 3.95+ GPA in IE, and is now a partner at a hot and coming VC fund. Her other roommate got a job with Google in Texas. They all received great financial aid at USC.
