Please Help! I'm so stumped with my essay!

Hi everybody! So, I feel like I've been having writers block for 3 months. I just CANT come up with something to write about for my Commonapp essay. Everything seems either too cliche or too this or too that... I just cant decide what's good enough.

What do you think colleges prefer to see? Intellectual, thought provoking essays with a personal connect? or a witty, "fun" essay about something quirky or overly creative? When I read some sample essays/topics it seems like the majority are more on the witty, funny side of things. Is it bad to write about something more serious?

Any suggestions at all would be greatly appreciated.

Whatever you do, make sure to have a personal connection. And if you do go the witty route, try not to be gimmicky or overly clever- don’t lose your voice in it!

Concentrate on ideas to support your topic, not the topic itself

Since on the Common Application you can write anything, it made me think it was too open. That is pretty hard for me. I went to the University Chicago’s essay page. They have some pretty crazy essay topics that just turn into something creative ^.^

I came up with my topic and wrote the essay last night no problem. (now revising)

Oh and the previous essay topics from past years aren’t all there. Only a few are there. You would need to Google those. (the topic I picked from them wasn’t on their past essays page).

Forget about what topics colleges prefer. The topic doesn’t matter. Truly, what colleges want to see is something personal, detailed, and revealing about you. Pick a topic that allows for an essay that is so you, so intimately connected with your experience, that no one else could write it.
