Hello everyone, I’m an international student (Asian) who recently got into Smith and Notre Dame. I know that they’re really different from each other with their own pros and cons, so I’d rather base my choice on the academic and financial factors. My intended major is biology and I want to attend grad school after college, but I can’t find much info about the bio major at ND and Smith. I heard that it’s easier to get involved in research in LACs, but ND also seems to be undergraduate-focused. About financial aid, I’ll have to take out 3k/year in loans for Smith and 7k/year for ND. I’d appreciate it if you could give me some advice on which school to enroll. Thanks so much in advance!
Compared side by side, the biology programs of Notre Dame and Smith would be equivalent in the sense that neither could be said to be better than the other. However, if you would be able to pursue additional course options in biology at MHC and Amherst, I’d say that Smith represents your stronger academic choice in this comparison.
That’s partially accurate @merc81
I’ve seen the five college system in person. Yes it’s used but more normally at its zenith for advanced science classes and resources of the university. The four lacs are more duplicative and an interesting thing to enjoy. It’s excellent. Also the interaction of the students beside the actual classroom is limited. It’s fairly tribal. Lol.
OP. Don’t underestimate the cultural differences of the schools and off campus communities you are comparing. It’s as different as different can be in college choice.
Both are fantastic academically.
Both schools offer excellent academics.
With respect to campus culture, these two schools are polar opposites.
Why did you apply to Smith College ?
Why did you apply to the University of Notre Dame ?
How do you feel about attending a single sex school ?
@privatebanker: Good points!
