Syracuse
Umass Amherst
Emmanuel
Lesley
Northeastern
The College of New Jersey
UVM
UNH

I would reduce your college list. First of all, how can you afford to apply to all of those colleges? I believe the average application fee is $50, probably more. If you apply to all of those schools, you’re looking at upwards of $700. I would say, you don’t need more than two safeties. After all, safeties are backups and you should be absolutely sure of your acceptance. Pick your two favorite safeties and eliminate the rest.

You have 16 colleges… It needs to be 5-8. I agree with erin94, you have too many safties. I think you have a high chance of getting into BU and NYU. GOOD LUCK!

Well, some of the colleges are free to apply to and my parents are alright with me applying to as many as a want. Should I cross off safeties that I don’t

want? Like I really don’t want to go to Emmanuel or Wheelock, but i’m positive I’ll get in.
I can’t think of others schools that I’m sure to get into.

I would say not nearly enough reaches.

also, while you say you want to stay in New England, that will hurt you, because the farther you get away from New England, the better your stats will look

there is simply too much talent in New England

also, if you apply to other regions, they may like you because of geographic diversity

also, there may be regions in the country where being Indian will be a plus

why no APs yet?

my son has taken EIGHT already. (entering the 12th grade)

Well my school is pretty tough (which is well known in mass) and its hard to get into an AP. Even the most intelligent people only have taken 1-2 APs going into their senior year.

Last year, my friend’s son, and Indian, who had a 740 on his math sat, and went to a fancy private high school in San Francisco (rich family) did not get into any of the northeastern schools.

but he did get into Wash U and Michigan

so it would be worth it, in my opinion, to look to the midwest.

while not as sexy as the northeast, you will be able to leverage your stats by applying to that region.

also, it is a total crapshoot.

my brother’s son, jewish, got into Cornell, but got wait-listed at Syracuse and Northeastern.

my point is that in Arkansas, you probably have the top stats in the whole state

in Mass, you are simply one of a million kids who got a 1400 on their SAT.

Yeah-I know it’s tougher to get into, but I’d rather go to a worse school and be near my parents than a better one and be far away.

OP, it’s refreshing to be able to say, as someone above did: too many safeties! Forget the stuff about Northeast schools being hard for NE kids to get into. All you have to do is look at the geographical distribution info on the web pages. And, from a competitive hs in MA- always good. Think about which of the safeties are actually too safe. I think you likely have a lock on UMass Amherst- great school plus the consortium. Think about which of the others offer the finaid you need (if you do.) Think of which have the better programs in education. Write great essays. Good luck.
Ps, lots of great schools have restrictions on the number of APs- it’s important to challenge onesself in the context of what the hs offers, but loading up on APs isn’t possible for all kids. And getting admitted is often about the “whole quality” of your app package.

Thanks! Which schools on my list would be considered safeties and which are reaches?

I don’t know about reps for an education major, so you’ll need to figure that out. But, on the surface, it seems Emmanuel, Wheelock, Lesley are the less competitive. Don’t have to drop all the safeties, just reconsider them. UDel? Is it that strong for you to go oos? Same for TCNJ. If you’re looking at the Catholic schools, wonder why Hampshire is there? It’s pretty liberal, some say “out there” and unstructured (and you can take classes there thru UMass.) But, you have to decide. If one or two has a great rep for teacher ed, that could be important.
