Although all primates use vocal and facial expressions to communicate , only the great apes –chimpanzees , bonobos, orangutans , and gorillas –use gestures as well ,they share this behavior with humans .
A they share this behavior
B this behavior is shared
C sharing which behavior
D a behavior shared by them
E a behavior they share
I crossed out a and b because it would then become a run on sentence. I crossed d and e because I know that such explanations come after nouns ex: I like football, a game i play during school. or I eat fish, a good source for protein. and here behavior cant explain well so I chose c but it is wrong and e is correct. can anybody pkease explain why e is correct and not c
Like relative pronouns, appositives can refer to entire clauses as well as nouns and noun phrases. So in this case “behavior” refers to the use of gestures. It’s normal English.
@WasatchWriter I know that this might be simple for you but I am an arab which makes it hard to me to comprehend these stuff. So can tell me why c is incorrect ? I am sorry but I am really trying to prep.
Can you also give me another example where an appositive refer to a clause
C is not really incorrect, but it is not as good as E. This is because the subject of the preceding clause is the apes, so it is good to follow it with a clause in which the apes are also the subject (“they share”).
Another example:
In the 1960s, most American teenagers listened to music in their native language, a preference they did not share with the Germans, who happily listened to rock ‘n’ roll in any language.
As you see “preference” refers to more than just a noun.
Another
I like to drive fast on back roads, a habit I got from my father.
Thank you so much for your time and explaination
