first of all.. please don't recommend me any dell laptops. i think their desktop systems are great, but they have a long way to go with their laptops. yeah, they're very inexpensive, but the build quality is just horrible.

ANYWAYS, here's what i'm looking for..
-at least a 14 inch screen
-VERY light. it's gonna be in my bookbag along with other textbooks, and i despise having a bookbag filled to the max and so heavy that the straps are about to rip
-sturdy and well-built. a lot of laptops tend to creak all over after a little bit of use. i can't stand it
-quiet. i don't want to hear the fan spinning around and i don't want to feel the rumble when my hands are on the keyboard
-i don't really care about the processor, graphics, etc. most laptops these days should be fine for my needs.
-under 1,200

please help me out! all i ask is no dell laptops, and i'm not interested in the new macbooks. the macbook pro would be very nice, but it's way too expensive. thanks!

hey forgiven, i'm also looking to find a good/dependable/basic laptop just for my school needs...

so why aren't you interested in the new macbooks? (curious bc i am)...i really want a safe/dependable machine for a change. i'm sick of PCs and their effing virus/spyware/adware problems = /....

I have been searching around for laptops too.

I found that sony makes one of the smallest and lightest laptops. They look great too. Personally, I also like the macbooks because they do also run microsoft office now. Macbooks are also sleek and light.

I know u wanted 14"+ but Averatec makes a damn awesome 12" laptop google them. I have 2 of their laptops and have never had problems, they are light on your wallet and have great support.

i was at first going to buy a macbook. with the student discount, i think it's a great deal.

the only problem is when you compare the macbook (white or black) to the macbook pro, you think in your mind, "man, this macbook is a piece of crap compared to the pro." i don't know, the screen isn't big enough for me on the macbook and i'm always gonna think to myself that if it really was worth the money. also, i'm gonna be using this computer for all of my needs, since i won't have a desktop on campus.

i have a very expensive think-pad (over 3,000). It heats up a lot, and i had to send it in twice, and the heating problem has never been really resolved.

Well if your getting a laptop today, you need one that is up to date, cool, usable, and has a sense of functionality. I think the Macbook would be perfect. Wide-Screen, Multiple Operating System functionality, Built-in camera, and a bunch of apple-unique features. I don't really see a good reason not to buy a mac nowadays, but if you were to buy a non-mac. I agree with the Thinkpad suggestion, but to be honest I can't stand windows xp, OSX has a dope interface and when it comes to maintenence, you might have a better chance with the mac. Their not perfect, but no laptop is.

Don't get a Mac. I bought Powerbook for my first year of college (which I am done with now), and it was not pleasant to use. I could NOT get wireless in many places that PCs could, or the wireless would fade in and out. The new PC Laptops seem a lot better, and they're cheaper, so you can get more with the same price. If I were to do it over again, I would consider getting a Lenovo X-Series, or Sony SZ/TX series...

i don't know about virus/spyware/adware problems, but i know the mac os does crash frequently, just like windows (even though the tv ads state otherwise..).
