Please Help Me

Hey everyone. First off, my stats are nowhere near Ivy material, so I understand if not many people are able to respond. Secondly, feel free to sugarcoat or be as blunt as you please, I can take it.

GPA - 3.0, as of right now (first semester of senior year). I know things will improve grade wise, but I also know that it's too late, so it won't really matter

SAT - 1210/1800 I would retake, but it's not possible (more on that later)
ACT - 27 (see above..)

APs - one semester of AP Spanish and AP Calc (again, more explanation later)

ECs - Horseback riding, 10 years
Lacrosse, 4 years (JV 1, Varsity 2,3,4 - Captain 4)
Amnesty International, 2 years
Barack Stars, registering voters, campaigning, etc.
Invisible Children : The Rescue
Study Abroad (Uruguay) - Ok, this is where it gets complicated. I know that studying abroad is great, but I'm worried about grades here. In short, the system is VERY different and I don't know how to merge it with my school's system. Also, this prevented me from retaking the standardized tests and further involvement in APs.

The schools I'm looking at are : University of Arizona
Warren Wilson College
SUNY New Paltz
SUNY Potsdam
Hofstra University
Rutgers University
Whittier College

Also, I'm not really sure of the best way to say this, but I haven't had a easy time for the past couple of years. I will talk about it if it would help anyone, but I'd rather not type it all out if it won't be of use.

I'm a nervous wreck right now, so it's very plausible that I've left something important out; feel free to let me know and thanks in advance.

Is the 3.0 weighted or unweighted and what would your unweighted and weighted gpa work out to number wise?
Your SAT and ACT is fine for SUNY New Paltz, SUNY Potsdam, Hofstra University, Rutgers University. I am not familiar with the other 2 schools and their requirements.

Hey i studied abroad too! did you do Afs? i did sya in spain. Dont worry, it lowered my gpa a ton. But it gives you something awesome to write about in your essays. Also whatever’s going on, i hope it turns out ok. That could also be an essay topic.
I think Whittier is a given for you. Add a reach to that just to try, cause i think you may get in.

The 3.0 is unweighted. I´m not sure what my weighted will be because I´ve not taken the APs yet; I´m still in Uruguay. I don´t even know how it´s going to work out, or even how many APs I´ll end up taking (my schedule for when I return isn´t worked out yet.)

U of A is my first choice; I was born in Tucson and have a deep longing to return and both of my maternal grandparents (who passed on long before their time) were alumni. Could someone chance me for there?

Also, thanks paigewg. I actually set this up without a program. My childhood best friend is Uruguayan and I´m living with her and her family. How´d you like Spain??

One last question; does anyone know of a way to inform the colleges of the problems I´ve had without letting my parents see? They´ll read the applications and essays, and I really would like to avoid hurting their feelings. I´m not talking about whining or giving excuses; just a concise “explanation”, for lack of a better word.

Oh, I didn’t see U of Arizona…your SAT is good for that school as well. Yes, definitely let schools know about the situation that effected your gpa.

Ok, thanks. What would be the best way to inform them?

You could make it the subject of your essay or include an additional informative letter.

I think you’re in good shape for most of those schools, especially the SUNYs. If you can write a good esasy that could be the deciding factor… Hoffstra might be tough, though.

Could you chance me?

Arizona only looks at SAT/ACT for honors college and Scholarship consideration. That being said, I think your gpa will qualify you, just write a good essay.

You should have no problem getting into several as long as you can afford them. Studying in an atypical country will make you interesting to these schools–they see a ton who went to France, Spain and now China, but you’re unique!

Most of these school will not meet financial need, so if you’re looking for aid the list is not the best.

It’s often a good idea to let your counselor write of any problems and leave your essay space for the positives.
