Please help us shorten The List

Whitman is a great school; if it was in the NE it would be giving the best schools in the region a run for their money.

Quote; Every time we go through the list there are good reasons to keep each school.

This is why you should NOT try to shorten the college list, IMHO…

No St. Olaf, No Lawrence. They’re both safeties, and she’s already applied to other safety schools. And from what you’ve written, she doesn’t seem to like those schools nearly as much as the other schools.

I applied to eight schools and was fine, but I finished all of my applications by the end of October. She has less than a month left (for most schools), so she might want to shorten the list even more since she has less time to finish her applications. Also, I applied to a lot of state schools that didn’t have a lot of essays, but my friends who applied to LACs had about 3 essays per school. So your daughter should either crack down on her applications now or drop some schools.

My D is pretty similar to yours. She liked Bard but decided the campus felt too remote and there were too many smokers. You might want to consider Connecticut College-- no merit aid, alas, but I think pretty strong financial aid, and great music, good theatre, pretty easy train rides to NYC and Boston.

We are SoCal people, and I strongly second (third?) Pitzer, and would encourage you to look into Occidental as well.

kwrinkle, it’s a stressful time for everybody. I’m so glad that I don’t have to do it all again, but here I am on CC, involved in everybody else’s college saga. Good luck to you and your daughter, she’s obviously a very bright kid.

Thanks for your help everyone. D dropped St. Mary’s/Maryland and Lawrence. Then she added Lawrence back in when she saw that their supplement doesn’t require any extended writing : ). And we added Trinity U – thanks gloworm, great suggestion. So:

Oberlin
Whitman
Bard
Pitzer
Colorado College
St. Olaf
Lawrence U
Trinity U
Madison
UNC Asheville
