hey everybody, I am a junior in high school right now… I did my freshman year in one country, then my sophomore year in US and now in other country again… I did not get any certification for completing those years (9th grade, 10th grade and now 11) because i always left the school before the end of the year (my parents had to move always because of their job), now I am worried… how am i supposed to apply to college in US if I don’t have any papers and even if I had them my grades always dropped towards the end of the year and because of all the moves I never knew whats going on in school, in US i managed to get a GPA of 4 out of 4 but i did really bad on the final tests (D’s and C’s) because i had to move… and on the other countries the school program is different and you cant come in the middle of the year so i don’t have a diploma… i just had to go to school because they had a law of 12 years in school… I don’t have SAT… I have nothing… I am a US permanent resident. What should I do? help me please
Have you discussed this unusual situation with your GC?
no, I don’t have one.
This is going to be challenging for you. If you lived in the US, I would suggest talking to your local community college to see if you could enroll there, then transfer to a 4 year college after receiving your AA degree (2 years for a full time student). We see students out here that have trouble getting paperwork from previous schools, but it honestly sounds like your paperwork would not tell a good story anyway…
thanks for the reply. I feel like its a waste of 2 years going to community college since i already have done hard classes in the schools abroad like: AP calculus and AP chemistry, computer science, biotechnology… I did pretty good but they did not let me take the final tests because of some weird laws… 2 years is too much to waste on things I already know well… any other options? what if i drop out of high school in 12th grade, can i go to community college for a year and then transfer to a 4 year college so i don’t have to waste time … i would like to do pre med and then med school
**by the way i do have some papers, half year grades with high marks… but i dont have any full year grades
The 2 years are not wasted… you finish the last 2 years at a 4 year college, so you still put four years in either way. Your final degree is then a bachelors degree from a four year school. You can do pre-med via this route, but you need to make sure you have a high GPA and good MCAT scores. The only way I could see this sorting out differently is if you had a good excuse for this (refugee status or something) – but it sounds like your parents just weren’t thinking about the consequences of moving you around and not having you actually complete school years in high school.
thank you very much! do all 4 year colleges accept transfer students?
Most do. It is obviously very hard to get into top schools as a transfer (harder than as a freshman). And cost can be an issue, as some schools do not offer as much financial aid to transfer students.
There may be other answers to your dilemma, too. That is just the one I can think of… but maybe other posters will come up with something.
