How much on average does a civil engineer make?? Becuase right now America had a shortage of Civil Engineers...and I was interested in majoring in....does anyone has any idea?

Average? About 55K/year, I'm told, according to some online salary survey I read somewhere. Coming from a good school with just a BS, starting salary can range from 40K-50K (Rice U was my undergrad, and that's pretty much the range that my colleagues started at). UIUC masters alumni start at about 55K. I start my job in June and the pay is quite nice for a first gig.

It's not particularly common to stay in civil engineering and make much more than 100K/year. Any more than that, you'd probably have had to be president of your company, or maybe you'd have started your own company, or you'd have followed a parallel career path within engineering, but as a consultant or project manager or something like that.

You won't be lighting up Benjamins just to watch them burn, but you won't be poor, either. It's a comfy living, and it's a cool field with lots of very interesting opportunities. Tromping around on construction sites is just a lot cooler than sitting in a cubicle, designing air conditioners, at least to my way of thinking.
