please narrow my list

I have seven right now, but want to do six...one less app to deal with and make it even......going to apply for chem engineering

UIUC
USC
UT
MIT
CMU
UCSD
Penn State

bump...........

If you are a guarantee admit at UT then forget Penn State - UT is a better school, has a better reputation, cheaper, and in a much better city.

it'd be nice to know more about you, but with the little information we have I second kcirsch

yeah Penn State isnt worth it at all.

Hopefully one of those publics is your in-state safety...

UT Austin has an excellent chem eng program. The only school on your list that I would choose over UT Austin is MIT. I would drop Penn State and UC San Diego and maybe USC. Add Rice (it is in TX and relatively inexpensive for a private), Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin. Maybe Texas A&M as a safety. I am afraid I made your list bigger, not smaller.

UT austin is in state, but im still a little nervous about getting into the engineering program...... no to aggies.....i put UC san deigo and usc because i want to apply to cali schools that i can actually get into. I want to go to a large school too so Rice got eliminated a while ago. umm i don't have much of my stats yet but i have a 700 sat ii chem, taking sat for a probable score of 2050 after taking 8 practice tests, retaking 620 sat ii math for a 700+, hardest classes possible at school, top 4 percent class rank, ap chem 3- i was a lazy sophmore, ap biology 4, engineering camp this summer and good ECs that are mostly dance

plz i just want to go to a good college, thanks im dropping penn state

bump another opinion would be appreciated

Penn State isn't horrible. If it were, would so many people go? I wouldn't think so.

I'm not trying to defend it, but seriously. You guys act like it's a diseased campus...

eliminate one of the calis

i wanna go to so cal

then only do UCSD (SOCAL) ... i dont know about USC

I'd apply to 3 schools if I was you. Since you are from Texas, you can't really beat UT-Austin. Since you said that you would like to go to California, USC and UCSB should be good schools. Unless your stats are in the top 25-50%, don't apply to MIT. No point in going out-of-state for a public school that's equal in quality (UIUC, Penn State), when you can save money and get a great education with UT-Austin. Carnegie Mellon may be an ok school for you as well. You need a solid safety.

Apply to UT-Austin, USC, UCSB, and Carnegie Mellon

the thing is, if i end up at ut, i will hate myself. i have to leave. well im a female and URM so i have a really good shot at mit. i think im going to apply to ervything on the list cept penn state now.

why would you hate yourself? you might find that with maturity and open-mindedness (as I did) that Texas really has a lot to offer and is a great place to live. I don't see the point in applying to 4 public schools.

texas, the state, makes me wanna kill myself. i want to go far away

I say just apply to UT. Give it a shot. You might regret not having it as an option later.

You aren't going to get into a school solely based on your ethnic and sexual status. Your SAT/ACT scores, GPA, Essays, Recs, ECs, curriculum, and rank are all far more important.

You need a safety, which is why you should apply to Texas. If you fit in their percentiles, it makes sense as a safety. It's very hard to OOS, unless you are in the top 25%. Especially for publics like Illinois and Penn State.

i read illinois and penn state treat OOS the same...is that wrong?
