Please, what are my chances for LSA-Computer Science?

I am out of state and applying to the University of Michigan, and early action. I would appreciate any feedback about my chances for admission to the Computer Science program in the College of LSA instead of through the College of Engineering. I may opt for computer science engineering later, but for now I believe the Computer Science - LSA program offers me more of what I am interested in pursuing academically and career wise.

I have the following:

  • 4.64 weighted GPA;
  • 3.87 unweighted GPA (got a couple B+s as a freshman);
  • 3.91 scholastic GPA (scholastic GPA is on my transcript and calculated by my high school to exclude non-academic classes like PE and sports grades).
  • Earned all A’s in sophomore and junior years in all honors and AP classes. My senior year course load is 5 AP courses and wrestling. I am currently earning all A’s.
  • Class Rank 19 out of 600 top 3.2%. Fairly competitive high school in Southern California.
  • SAT 1480 (760 math, 720 r&w) (Note: I took SAT twice. 1480 is second and most recent score. My first test score was 1320 taken as a sophomore to experience the test and to shake some "first time" butterflies. I took it cold and did not study for it.
  • AP Scholar with Distinction.
  • Work Experience: I did a summer internship program this last summer with a corporate IT department learning JavaScript and HTML coding. Also assembled PC hardware with software from scratch.
  • 2 years with high school wrestling team in my sophomore and junior years; I was league champion 2016-2017 season which also earned a spot at CIF Championships; Tournament Gold Medal winner. Earned varsity letter junior year. My name will be permanently affixed in high school gym for becoming league champion.
  • Other ECs include various volunteer work, on-line computer coding classes during summer.

Thank you so much in advance for your time.

Can you recalculate your uwGPA without subgrades for all courses? It seems it will still be around 3.87. This is the admission average in the last couple years. Your test score is slightly above admission average. As these admission stat include in-state students, your stat is likely slightly below the admission average of OOS students whole the OOS admission rate is around 20%.

CSE '15 here.

If I were you, then I would personally talk about using Computer Science in an interdisciplinary manner, so that it leverages both LSA and the CS department.

Recently, uofm has been trying to push for CS + X (copying Stanford). Where X would be a humanities major such as anthropology , linguistics, and psychology

I think a lot of times people think way too much “inside the box” and think about Computer Science in a very cut-throat and capitalistic nature, but it can used for social impact.

But that’s totally up to your preference.

@ billcsho, thanks for your response. The 3.87 uwGPA I posted is without subgrades and does not consider the pluses and minuses. It also includes physical ed classes where I actually earned two B+'s in my freshman year. If I remove all three years of Phys. ed. classes from my gpa calculation, my academic uwGPA is 3.91

@betoh, thanks for the suggestion and fantastic link. It just so happens that my essay does discuss the interdisciplinary path I am interested in pursuing at U-M.

UMich count all classes for GPA, but the upward trend may help. Are you planning to retake the SAT or try ACT?

@billcsho, I did retake the SAT on Saturday. We’ll see if I improved any. It’s funny that I took all 8 College Board SAT practice tests in their practice guide and scored an average of 1550 on them. My last practice test I took was the week before this last real SAT that I took on Saturday and I scored 1570 on it. Go figure. :((
I don’t get how my real score was so far off the practice tests which are suppose to be real past SAT tests.

No ACT for me. This last SAT I took will be it for college admissions, other than the two SAT Subject tests I’ll take in November.

Hopefully you will get a score around your practice score this time. It will make a big difference.

Try the ACT…unlike the SAT…it has a science section that will likely boost your overall composite score.
