Which cell phone carrier has the best coverage on the yard? Is the coverage also good in Bancroft? I have heard from a 2/C that Sprint coverage is very good -- never had a problem. I would appreciate any input -- we are interested in the best coverage. What about the other cell phone carriers?

Do the mids have phones in the rooms themselves, now? As in "land lines"?

Another advantage to the 800 numbers is the ability to dial them directly from the land lines in the room, (yes, Z, they do have a phone line in the room) thus nullifying the worry about cell connectivity from inside Bancroft. Our 2C (!) bought himself a cordless phone for the room to share and it got quite a workout between all the roommates.

As to the cell, since we live in Alaska and do not have a carrier here that will work there, we just waited until we were there for I-Day and got him all set up with a cell phone, too. Emily is right, they really need the cell phones now for accountability and to keep in touch when off the yard. From what I understand, cell-phones also save a great deal of time in the hall because mids can call classmates, etc., rather than walking to their room only to find that the person they are looking for is out.

Just my experience with my own mid. Others' experiences may vary...:)

Emily, how does it feel to have a stripe now? Pretty incredible? Great work! :)

Oh, and our mid has Cingular and has never had any problems. Great signal from the yard. Then again, he is on 5-4...

The only reason I can think of for a Mid to have a cell phone in the Hall is for privacy. Gotta suck talking to the GF with your roomates sitting there...

Momof1 - So which cell phone carrier did you go with? And does you son have good coverage?

So Sorry Momof1 -- I did not scroll down far enough to see all of your response. Thank you.

We went with Cingular and have had no problems. He is on the fourth floor, though, and that can only help. He pays $50.00 a month, but that is with unlimited nights and weekends, long distance, text capability and voice mail. All pretty standard. Another use for the cell phone is to call his dad and I at work. Sometimes he calls us during the day on his cell since we are 4 hours behind EST and we chat a bit or he calls with special requests for stuff to be mailed, etc. No problems.

'sokay! :)

Ahem....

DECK.

Well, I'm not in the Navy! However, I do stand corrected. Are ya gonna put me on the bulkhead for that?:)

It's "Put you in hack". LOL! :D

I have asked countless mids and families this question. Bottom line - the room location in Bancroft hall determines whether a person has cell coverage in their room - no matter who the carrier is. If your mid has an outside room versus an inside courtroom room - you will have different answers to this question. Last summer when we were in Annapolis with our verizon phone - we had no coverage issues. Our older daughter from CT with a Sprint phone came down and she had no coverage issues. We've opted to send our daughter with a Sprint phone. Works for us since they have 7pm nights and with her on the east coast and us in CA - we can call her just about any afternoon our time for no charges. Plus we got a local to San Diego number, so my calls are free. But we have no idea if she'll have decent coverage until she's there....and we just have to take what comes. If she has no room coverage right away - then email and leaving messages on the phone will have to suffice.

Well it was a heavy weight on my shoulder ;) So glad it is over.
yuck now summer school

just as a clarification- by courtroom room, you mean a room on one of the two "Goat Courts"..the one in 3rd wing i lived on last year. it refers to the ugly square court in the middle, not to a courtroom. legend has it that the mascots used to be kept there..hence the name.

You guys still have parties in there? Used to be a hoot so long as the OOW didn't find out (or care). :D

I lived on the one in 4th Wing Plebe Year. :)
