What is the policy regarding cell phones? Obviously not during plebe summer but other than that are they allowed at all?

Nevermind I asked my Squad Leader from NASS and she answered. She said to bring it to I-Day, they will take it away, but you get it back for the Academic Year.

Bring the cell phone to I-Day. It will be taken from you but returned for your calls home during Plebe Summer. I suggest buying a cheap, distinctive, case for the phone and write your name on the case. Many cell phones look alike, a cheap distinctive case with your name on it, in bold letters, makes it easy for the CADRE to find it for your phone calls. Remember to turn off your phone before turning it in. You don't want a dead battery when you get it back for a five minute phone call. After Plebe Summer you will be allowed your cell phones for calls.

yes, most mids have cell phones with them at all times, but they are turned off during classes, meals, and other military obligations.
you may also notice that bulky cell phones are not popular since they cannot be worn on their belts. they need to fit neatly in pockets.

Bring your charger to I-Day as well and turn it in with your phone...

Could someone in the know please comment on the current regulations concerning the CARRYING of cell phones (regardless of what Class you're in).

Back in my day the big deal was beepers. You could not wear one on the uniform unless it was the Duty Beeper. I assume this is the case now, but would like confirmation one way or the other.

Also, are the Mids allowed to carry them to meals or classroom buildings, etc.?

Thanks.

As of last year, there weren't any midregs regulating when you could be carrying a cell phone. If anything, you're expected to have a cell phone on you when in uniform and off the yard so that you can be reached at any time. That being said though, there was a plebe in my company last year who got fried, and was almost put on restriction over spring break, when his cell phone went off in a nav class. My solution was that I always had my cell phone on silent 24/7.

Ouch! Harsh!

Granted, I'm looking back across 16 years, but if I were a Mid today, I'd just keep the phone off and in my room unless I was out in town or using it after hours. Too much of a PITA otherwise....

Thanks for the update, Stallion. :)

I also believe a Mid cannot "walk and talk" at the same time- they must come to a stop if/when on the phone. Other than that, have not seen any phones "worn" on the belt, etc.... all seem to be tucked away (discretely) in pockets!

^^^ yes, that is correct navy2010 (per my mid)
walking and talking on the cell phone is not permitted. it's just like walking and eating or like walking and drinking. all are considered sloppy.

My youngster does not carry his cell phone to class or any military obligation. Not worth the accidental "left on." And even in the manner mode you actually can hear the vibrations. He leaves it in his room most of the time and carries it with him when going outside to make a call, after class or military obligations or going off the yard - that is a must so that he can be reached.

Different cell phone companies have different coverage on the yard and within Bancroft. Depends a lot where the Mids room is to have coverage in their room. Our last phone company, the Mid had very poor coverage, new company the coverage has been improved.

Even for Plebes:

Cell phones are allowed. My Plebe requested a "small thin phone" one wich could fit in a pocket on a uniform. No bulky cell phones will comply with regulations. Had to change phone so it could fit unabtrusivley in uniform pocket and not show.

Is their use permitted during study hours or between afternoon class and study hours, or just during liberty?

I know they can be used "officially" during liberty hours the same as a land line. About study hours, I don't know if it is officially sanctioned but have not heard that it is cut off or restricted. Good question. I will ask and let you know.

The policy in previous years has been that mids are only restricted from cell phone use during study hour. Up until this year, study hour was only for plebes, youngsters, and unsat 2/c and firsties. However, the only time the regulation was ever truly enforced was against plebes.

Just got an answer. Use of cell phones during study hours is prohibited. However, no one cares or checks as long as use of cell phone is not abused. Depends on the Company, but most disregard prohibition and allow use during study hours as long as all other requirements have been met (Rates, Duty Watch, etc..).

You forgot to mention drinking Starbucks, talking on the cell phone, and putting on makeup while driving all at the same time while cutting someone off on I-95 on the way to a Navy lacrosse game.
