Hey, it's College Confidential!

"Hey, it's College Confidential!"

I really don't think that's funny, and here's why:
I was originally directed to this board because my parent's have a friend with a son who will be going to the academy this year. The son was lurking on the boards here and was getting what I strongly feel was bad advice and some outright wrong information from the "parental experts" on this board. I believe that many of the parents posting here, while certainly intelligent, successful and caring folks, are woefully ill-qualified to give the candidates advice on what to expect at the academy. Third-hand information gleaned off a message board or second-hand tales told to a midshipman's sponsor hardly make someone an expert on academy life. Thus, if anyone who is actually actively posting is an alum, then I would recommend that the candidates actually listen to what that person is saying. Otherwise, the candidates should take anything they read with an enormous grain of salt. Judging from the comments I've read, none of the parents are grads.

Thanks candidatemom for answering. I'm off this forum. Nothing good is here for me

DT:
You of all must realize the disparities in the total experience for each midshipman.
First of course, is the difference in personality. What annoys the heck out of one person, is shrugged off by another as only mildly inconvenient. The plethora of rules get under the skin of some, while again are only a minor problem to others.

Second, the difference in experience is dependent on the midshipman's company. Some companies are more laid back, while others are adament that each and every rule is implemented and followed to the letter.

The combination of those two factors leads to information which may appear contradictory.
Information shared here reflects the best of one's experience. The first (or second)-hand information that is shared here may seem way off the mark from what you know, and yet still be valid due to the disparities in experience, as well as imperfect memory and/or change in policy over time. And so it is indeed possible that some posters (besides you) are grads, despite their information being so different from what you know.

I am chalking up the intense and vitriolic comments which have been posted by some plebes, to stress, related to the end of the semester and upcoming final exams. If things were as horrendous and as intolerable as has been reported, I have no doubt that the writer(s) would have their request(s) for separation already filed.

I would like to hear from these same people the day after Herndon. I think we would have a more reflective view of their year, both good and bad.

No matter what your chosen path, there will be stupid things you must do, for no apparent sane reason, just because your bosses or board of directors said so. Such is life. When you decide that the minutiae is not worth the satisfaction you get from the rest of your work, you move on to something else.

Good luck on your upcoming exams.
CM

Yes, plebes break that rule everyday. In fact, right now, i'm listening to country, my one roommate is watching Reservoir Dogs, and the other is playing video games. We wern't like this much first semester, but now, if you aren't, then something's up.

Hey Deep Throat
Here's the family line up USNA 82, USNA 87, USNA 52, USNA 45....any other questions?

Question to current plebes (or plebe moms):

Have the plebes picked their majors yet? I'm curious if any plebes were forced to tech majors this year.

They picked before spring break. I do not know if anyone was placed in a major that was not their first choice.
CM

I think if you wanted Poli Sci, you may have gotten your second choice. There were 50 more people than slots. That's not the norm. In past years they've managed to give everyone their first choice...I guess it varies from year to year.

So then, is it true....? Poli Sci and you fly?
Thanks.
NAPS05mom

"Here's the family line up"

Which one are you?

DeepThroat

Not necessarly. You can have a non engineering major and not get the service selection you want...you still have put maximum effort into your studies no matter what you major in in order to get a good service selection slot. Husband's 82 and I get all my info from him or my brother 86, dad 52 or uncle 45

oops meant 87!

A little civility and respect goes a long way in this world.

highandtight I completely agree with you that the parents of current and prospective mids have little authority to speak on behalf of USNA. If you want some advice, listen to the mids, cause people who haven't gone don't have a clue of what they are talking about. BTW for all the parents of 2009 mids and beyond, I really question your children's intrest and motivation for going to any of the service academies. You all seem more concerned about their education than they do.

Agreed. Why don't the high school students themselves post online? I know you say that they are busy, but consider this. I have a full day of school, sports, homework, and a weekend job, but I still have enough time to read the boards. Come on.
With respect,
CCR

yeah, I worked until 6 and I just got back form working out 15 min ago, and I still have all my homework. I really respect the proespective mids who don't need "mommy" to post for them. If they are not reading this, then what good does it do for them??

Reminder: this thread is titled "Plebe Summer and Plebe Year." If you have comments about parent participation in the forum, why not start a different thread? That way this one can remain useful for those seeking info.

Highandtight, you're out of line. Again. Your tone prevents anyone from taking you seriously. Perhaps a break is a good idea.

KateLewis, i would love to start a new thread, unfortunately, they are moved, censored, or removed entirely. Thats is why, as i just said, i will not be posting here anymore.

On a side note- It seems to me that the parents networks about the academy are nothing more than a huge system of information inbreeding, in that the final outcome is well, disgusting and inbred. I still can't believe some of the rumors my mom has heard as "facts" on some of the other sites.

Agreed- Sometimes I am less than subtle in my opinions.
Disagreed- Lets whine about it.

Closing thoughts- this website is a good idea that has been corrupted by parents living hyper-vicariously through their children. Why is it that screennames with the word "mom" somewhere constitute 90% of the posts?

CollegeCONFIDENTIAL? I think not. Perhaps CollegeCensored, CollegeFORPARENTS, CollegeGLORIFIED, or COLLEGENOTREAL are more appropriate. It seems whenever real mids post with their feelings(whether or not they are what you think they should be feeling), someone posts something to the effect of "youre not representing the academy" or "you arent acting honorably". Give me a break. We are spending our time on this website in the first place.

And now, i must go to bed.
