Plebes should walk in the door on I Day, probably, with a little bit of cash in their wallets? I realize they wont really be needing any money through Plebe Summer. True?

What about during the Ac Year?

Send cash? Send checks to deposit in NFCU?

What about those "new" Yard Cards? (Someone talked about them at our Plebe Picnic last week...)

Current mids--what do you use money for? How much did you need over plebe year? what form?

Don't think so.

From what I understand there will be several trips to the Mid Store for necessities during Plebe Summer.

You can send money with your plebes. The only time they will need it during plebe summer would be during the trip to Baltimore. I think I got myself a debit card, however, I had no idea how to use it so I was SOL (got paid in cash during my high school days as a busboy and in middle school with my paper route). As far as the ac year went, I found that the money we made every month usually wasn't enough to cover what we spent. Especially after plebe year, when, as a youngster we were afforded a good amount of liberty (no longer true). Between all that and trips during leave periods such as (in my case) bowl games and a few days in Manhattan every Christmas or trips to the Jersey shore and a few trips to Italy (visiting family) in the summer. By the time I got my 2nd class loan I had plowed through all my savings from high school, which included the 2000+ entrance fee before plebe summer. Personally that was fine with me, because I wasn't paying for college and I enjoyed the freedom to be able to take trips during my time off... All that being said, when I was at school I didn't have access to my old savings account so my Dad gave me a credit card, which I used very sparingly. Maybe at most 20-30 dollars a month during 2/c year was all I needed to supplement my pay... A lot of well to do parents bankrolled their children with several hundred a month, but that really seemed like a bit of overkill.

To put it all into perspective, the amount of money you spend increases exponentially with the amount of liberty you have, with a huge factor placed on whether or not your 21. With the way things are going now, there isn't any reason why mids can't live on their meager monthly salaries while at school, although they'll probably have to dip into savings or daddy's wallet if they plan on doing much with there leave time.

My son deposited his graduation money into his Navy Federal account and has a debit card for access. I will give him $100 for his wallet as specified in the information booklet.

my plebe summer, we were given 1 day to shop in the mid store, if you'd like to call it shopping. anything and everything we were allowed to purchase could be done using the midcharge (its a weird form of funny money). if it wasn't mid-chargeable (eg food, candy, and anything not issued pretty much) we weren't allowed to even think about buying it. dunno if times have changed since then but i don't see there being a big difference. with that being said, $100 should be ample to get through plebe summer. as far as the ac year goes, it depends what your plebe will want to do with his/her free time. a few meals out and a movie or two in annapolis and the monthly paycheck is gone. I don't think supplementing a little bit during plebe year is a bad idea, though keep in mind that they maybe get 4-5 days off the yard a month...

Nice thing about living in Alaska is that I will get about $1500 dollars at the beginning of October for just being in Alaska and the governor is talking about an additional $1200 energy rebate in September. That will be a nice little supplement to my income.

we sent a roll of quarters in one of his care packages-
during sailing rotation, some of them were able to access the vending machines for a cold drink in the sailing center.... ditto in the locker rooms for those going out for sports. The only request we had from him during the whole summer was for another roll of quarters! To this day, I still put my quarters aside and deliver them down when i get enough collected!

I brought like 20 bucks to plebe summer and I don't think I spent any of it. We went to the mid store once to buy things and all you can buy is cleaning supplies. For some reason my roommates ended up buying them all. You might lose it so I definetly wouldn't suggest bringing $100. There's nothing that you need over those 5 weeks really.
