plug for DU

DU was in my DD’s final three…she attended admitted students day at each. The new library is amazing! The campus is beautiful. The food (two visits worth)is meh… It didn’t seem as diverse as some places. We really enjoyed Denver, but as someone mentioned travel can be iffy…we were the last flight to make it out before the airport closed for a storm last April- and the day had been beautiful…I think she could have been happy there but ultimately found a bit better fit. DU is definitely worth a look!

Thanks for all the responses everyone. S and I just had another talk. This is the only school he is genuinely excited about. I told him lots of kids want to go to school at a place just like where he’s grown up (preppy, affluent, WASPy to the max) and he said “yeah – I feel like I’ve done that.” Then he reeled off a list of LACs that would be just like his high school.

So he’s going to apply EA then if he gets in, he’ll visit (I am out of points/miles/dollars to visit now).

I think he’d love it there. I think he sees it as a blend of school and camp in Maine.

Classof2015- right or wrong…we felt DU had a bit of the “preppy, affluent, waspy feel” so it will be good for your S to visit to make sure it is what he thinks it is and what he wants. Others may have felt differently there…

Aah – good point – thanks. We will definitely visit and try to pick up on the vibe.

Question – what happens when the airport shuts down? Kids are stranded inside the airport til it re-opens and flights are available? How long does it usually shut down for?

I don’t know the actual demographics of the student body. DU reports 20% students of color. Of the majority white students, I suspect many if not most are from upper middle class backgrounds. Because of its location near the mountains, the DU student body is self-selected as generally more outdoorsy than preppy. You’ll see far more students in flip-flops, athletic shoes and hiking boots than in topsiders, penny loafers, or designer footwear.

@Boysx3: I often wondered how things may have turned out for my son had he gone instead to American. No doubt the students at American are more politically engaged and DC provides a richer academic environment outside the classroom. In the end, I know S was incredibly happy at DU and that happiness translated into success.

Lest I leave the impression that DU is not politically engaged, I offer this video which offers an in-depth look at the campus, faculty, students, and values of the University of Denver as it hosted the first presidential debate in 2012. Anyone interested in DU should watch this:

Thank you so much for posting that video! I had not seen it before.

And…best of all…I caught a couple glimpses of my son. He was on campus for the debate. it was also great to hear from some of his professors…I met some of them at his departmental reception at his graduation.

^
very cool!

DU get together in DC next week…

S2 and one of his good friends in DC who is also a DU grad–are organizing a dinner for a few other DU people in DC next week. A DU professor is going to be in town and the plan apparently is football and dinner at some sports bar.

great info

ldavis, when will you hear? Did you apply ED?

My daughter applied early action and no word yet-- they said by late December, though when I looked back through this forum I guess last year the info was available online by mid-December. The waiting is hard. :)

I was told to expect to hear in Jan… not ED.

Sorry to introduce a different topic in this thread, but does anyone have parents/friends/relatives who were a part of llc?

My son was in PLP which was at the time listed as part of the llcs. He loved the program but didn’t particularly care for the people who were more competitive than collaborative. If you have a particular interest in one of the areas, then apply! You will also have the opportunity to meet students who share mutual interest in your chosen first year seminar. Son met two of his future roommates in his FSEM class. My opinion is that DU is small enough a school that Living-Learning Communities are not necessary

Would you suggest applying to honors? Or no, since their programs are all already pretty good…

I’d say it depends upon whether or not you would prefer to be surrounded by more academically-motivated students. Either way you will have to opportunity to distinguish yourself
