We would love to know more about the school for my son. Anyone around to ask questions.

Wanted to know more from the personal factor. What are the pros and cons. Do a lot of students stay around for the week-ends?

Also, I understand it is required to take 1 year of foreign language. Is that still true?

My son is a freshman at DU and is very happy. Most weekends he has stayed in Denver although he has gone skiing twice.(but just for a day--he doesn't want to be off campus for too long). A lot of weekends he keeps to campus, but often on one night a bunch of students will take the light rail to partake of things that Denver has to offer. For example, my hs junior son and I visited recently and my DU college son and his friends took us on the light rail to the 16th street mall for dinner.

There is still a one-year foreign language requirement but he likes his class. About 14 students, class conducted in the foreign language (2d quarter--he took a different language than in high school).

His classes have been small. First quarter, he had two classes of 15, one in the low 20s and his "big" class of about 50 but it was team taught by 3 full professors.

This quarter, he has 3 classes of 15 or so, and one class of about 25.

His classes are demanding but not absurdly so--he is always working but schedules in time for fun--he says time management is key because there is always a lot to do. He is in a fraternity and on the club ultimate frisbee team and on a broomball team and also is getting involved in some activities in the business school as well as at Hillel and Chabad.

Is there anything specific you want to know about?

Cheez,

Have you visited DU yet? We recently returned from visiting it with our youngest son and he is thinking of going there as well--he really, really liked it.

i'm also thinking of going to DU. at first i was really excited to go, but now i'm starting to have some misgivings. i'm afraid it might be too "outdoorsy" for me. i love skiing and nature and stuff, but i'm not sure if DU is the right place for me. i'm visiting in april so i guess i'll find out then.

the next school i would go to by the way is indiana university - bloomington

Johnny,

I laughed when I read your post because for my son it also came down to University of Denver and Indiana as his two favorite choices. They are both great schools so you can't go wrong. He decided that DU offered all that IU did, but, that being in the city, he would have more to do if he ever outgrew campus life. He and his friends do stuff in the city 2 or 3 times a month. He does stuff in the mountains once or twice a month two--he likes to mix it up between camping/hiking/snowboarding and clubbing/concerts/movies dinner. Because of DU's prime location, he has the luxury of enjoying both kinds of entertainment, not to mention all the stuff that's always going on right on campus.

Bumping an old thread, waiting for some reliable posters to see this thread and smile :)

Please update us?

Does anyone know when early action decisions really come out?

I applied regular so I’m not sure about when decisions come out, but I got my decision in early March.

DU can be outdoorsy, there’s the Alpine Club and it’s pretty easy to get a rideto the mountains, but there’s plenty to do in Denver and also on the campus itself and if you don’t want the outdoors aspect, you don’t have to take advantage of it. There are events every weekend in the pub and in the music building.

The language requirement is one year, but there are a bunch of language placement exams you can take. I tested out of the entire requirement and the test was not that hard.

Who is your son? Does he live in Halls? I’m in North.

Here is what the website says:

Are the Hyde interviews absolutely required? S2 somehow missed the fact he needed one.

I’m pretty sure they’re not required. I would double check with Admissions on that one. But I would still recommend it because a lot of the people I know with scholarships interviewed. I think my scholarship may be partly due to some things we discussed in the interview, which was one of the best of my college interviews.

My son was very disappointed with his interview. He said the person just read from a list of questions, didn’t respond or react to answers. It’s interesting that rix1897 thought it was such a good interview.

KG,
I am sorry your son was disappointed with his interview. Some interviewers just are not as good as others. My sons both enjoyed their Hyde interviews when they had them.

S2 is a junior at DU, just coming home from a Cherrington semester abroad. He had a great experience with his study abroad, but is looking forward to getting back on campus. A lot of peoplehe can’t wait to see, a lot he wants to accomplish.

S3 applied to DU and was accepted but decided not to attend DU as he did not want a brother on campus…he was going to be in the same program as his older brother, and had had enough of following older brothers’ footsteps all through our small high school.

S2 felt the same way and decided not to apply to S1’s school. He is looking forward to hearing from DU, if accepted he will visit campus in April. Hope the weather is good. All other schools to which he applied are in warmer climates. He applied because of the very good things he heard from some of his friends.

We know a couple people there - they all really like it.

Son had Hyde interview in NYC. It was pretty awful - they also read from a list of questions. oh well - such is life. We were told at the interview that letters would be mailed 12/24 (today) so as not to ruin anyone’s Christmas. Fingers crossed!

Thanks njmommyof2 -frankly it’s a bit of relief to hear that someone else had the same bad experience. My son has had several interviews - and all of have been in depth, thoughtful and he enjoyed them. We had to drive three hours for this one - and it was such a disappointment. Thanks for the 12/24 news - had not heard that - we will keep any eye out for the mailbox. Do you know if scholarship news comes with admission info?

My scholarship news came with the admission info but I did regular decision so it could be different.

I’m so sorry your Hyde interview wasn’t that good! My interviewers read a couple of questions from the list and then adjusted the interview to expand upon stuff I told them about myself and my activities and classes etc. I guess every interviewer must be different.
