Pocket money at Stanford

After all is taken care of (tuition, room & board, books, travel), how much money would a freshman need per month for other expenses including leisure? I suppose this would change from person to person, but what would be the range, from a strict minimum to quite comfortable?

My D starts in September (so excited!) and would rather have a monthly allowance than ask for money when needed. We totally agree but have no idea what the amount should be.

She is not a spender, will pay attention to her budget, and will seek to work on campus, but she will need an allowance from us in the first few months to a year.

I'd appreciate it if you could give me an idea. Thanks.

Any Stanford parents out there? Or current students?

I asked my graduating senior your question and she actually called me with the answer, which is a huge shock. She said freshmen need minimal spending money since they don’t go off campus much. Her suggestion was $20 a week. She was dorm staff for two years and she said that the trips or events is where freshman may not have the money. For example, Snow Trip can cost $90 and a Giants game may cost $40. She said her dorm did one event every two months. She says she was approached many times with explanations of freshman being broke. Hope this helps.

Yes that helps a lot. Thank you emgamac!
