Poland Study Abroad (Holocaust)

I am just going to be a sophomore in high school, but Swarthmore is def. on my list for college's. I was reading the website and came across the Poland Study Abroad. I would like to be a print journalist, film actor or screenwriter but I have always had an interest in the Holocaust. I even wrote to some people and hope to write a story about them. I am half Jewish, but I'm raised Roman Catholic and half Italian. I do not want to major in Jewish Studies or any other religion for that matter. I'm just interested to know about it and everything. I think it would be sad but interesting to interview people there and write stories and visit the concentration camps. Would Swarthmore even be a good school for me, this is the program that got me all interested in the school? Also, I may even want to major in Film Studies or English. Social Studies has always been my best subject and I've always liked reading Historic Fiction. Thanks!

Swarthmore is a great choice for students like you who have firm ideas about what they want to do and how they want to get there. Your stated interests bring to mind Lauren Stokes, who just graduated '09, with majors in History (Highest Homors) and German Studeis. Spent a semester in Germany her Jr year and will return next yr to spend a yr on a Fulbright, researching Holocast education. Whatever you want to put together for yourself is possible at Swarthmore; its small size and access to faculty are well exploited by students who know what they want and need help getting there. Good Luck!!

Thanks momuv2. I think Swarthmore may be a great choice for me and that girl def. does sound like me. I just wouldn’t have majored in German or any language.

Lauren was a History and German Studies major–not the same thing as simply the German language. However, don’t be so quick to dismiss language study! It may be helpful or even necessary for study abroad, and it is definitely necessary for many graduate fields of study.

I’m going to take French in high school, I would take Italian but my school doesn’t offer it. Do you know anybody who does the Poland abroad with Holocaust studies? You have to know Polish to do it, but could I learn the language in a couple years? I also want to learn Italian in college.

Well, the two Swarthmore programs in Poland are fairly specific–one is for Dance/Theater Arts, and the other for Engineering. Certainly, you could look into other programs not affiliated with Swarthmore or study abroad in Germany, Austria or Russia.
Swarthmore does not have Italian, but Haverford does. If you were my kid, as a sophomore in HS, I would tell you to keep your options open! You never know what other interests may develop into a course of study or career. My D switched her intended major 4 or 5 times in the college app process (and each time, I would have said that it was perfect for her!) What she ended up doing was not at all something I would have predicted while she was in HS.

I have liked to act since I was 6, but also like print journalism and screenwriting. I thought you could take classes about Holocaust studies:

" Students participating in the programs in both Bytom and Krakow will be able to enroll for the equivalent of a full semester’s credit (4 to 5 credits). Beyond credits in theater, dance, and intensive Polish, a menu of possible tutorials is being developed in Polish literature and history, environmental studies, film, religion, Jewish and Holocaust studies, art history, and other fields."

I got it here: [Swarthmore College :: Theater :: Study Abroad](Study Abroad :: Department of Theater :: Swarthmore College)

PS: Is this for Theater & Dance? I only like Theater and I’m a terrible dancer, lol.

“I would like to be a print journalist,”

If you are only interested in print journalism, give up on that career goal. Seriously. You won’t get hired. Or, more accurately, there aren’t paying jobs for print journalists. (I work in a non-profit with some of the best college journalists/recent graduates out there, so I’ve got some sense of this.)

My passion since I’ve been six has been Acting. I got into film acting and I like it a lot better and don’t really like Theater anymore. I think I would only go into Drama if I went to NYU or I went to Chapman’s BFA in Screen Acting. I wouldn’t want to major Theater at Swarthmore. I got into print journalism a couple years ago and it was originally a back up plan. But I’ve also gotten interested in the Holocaust and I ended up writing a letter to someone. I would like to do an article on this person, if possible. I also would like to report or be an columnist. I also like travel & arts journalism. I would love to travel the world and write about people and take pics! That would be a dream world, to work for a travel magazine. I also would love working for Variety or futoncritic about TV/Movies. I use to be all in the new pilots and the rating and which shows are canceled and etc. I am to busy to do that now though. I wouldn’t mind just being a regular journalist though. I also just have an interest in screenwriting. I may like writing and being in my own show and I have so many idea’s for TV Shows that I may want to write one.

I have also thought about being an entertainment lawyer, but does sound a little boring. I’m not the best at math and it seems like it has lots to with it. I also may like just being a criminal lawyer, but I don’t think I could stand up for someone who is murder. I could never be a doctor, I hate blood and needles and science and math for that matter! I am a Social Studies and English person all the way. So, that’s what I’m into. I really do not know what to major in. I did like Northwestern’s program where you get a BA/MA in journalism in 4 years though. It also seems like all the ideal career’s, don’t make much money if you’re not big and I would need another and another back up plans.
