I am going through topics to write about for a college app essay (to Cuny Honors). The topic (below) is practically begging me to write about my political views but I am worried that could be too generic. I don't know if I should just go with the politics or switch to another topic (if so, any idea what topic?) Thanks for any and all help.

"Please write an essay of not more than 500 words that conveys to the reader a sense of who you are and what you care about. Possible topics may include, but are not limited to, experiences that have shaped your life, the circumstances of your upbringing, your most meaningful intellectual challenge or achievement, the way you see the world-the people in it, events great and small, everyday life-or any theme that appeals to your imagination. Please remember that we are concerned not only with the substance of your prose but with your writing style as well. "

why is that? my application is actually sparkled by political activities. I also indicated that in my essays. Many colleges openly assure students that admissions officers will maintain the impartiality of their views on sensitive political issues.

It's not the impartiality of admissions departments per se that should considered, but also the arbitrary agendas of the individual reviewers, because total individual impartiality is impossible and one minor factor could derail a student's admission. At least regarding college interviews, mentioning politics is a dangerous idea I've heard. As for admissions essays, I'd still say be VERY careful, unless political expression is CLEARLY requested in the prompt. Here, it's subtly suggested, but I'd still stray from it as much as possible.

Yeah I talked to a few teachers and they all told me to stay away from politics. I'm thinking about writing my essay about umpiring. I umpire in a league and I could talk about how it taught me patience, discipline, etc, all these things. I also am the youngest umpire in the league.
