Political culture at Brown

I’ve heard Brown is very liberal. How does this affect more conservative students? Are they considered outcasts, or are people somewhat tolerant?

A lot of the Brown campus is liberal, but there are a good amount of conservatives as well. There are certainly extremists on campus (mostly from the liberal side), but I would generally say people are understanding of other students’ beliefs. I would say, from my experience on campus, most students are moderate about their standings.

For example, this year we had a few off-campus speakers protesting at Brown because they didn’t believe in evolution. Most of the Brown students were respectful of the speakers’ beliefs and didn’t go out of their way to retaliate, but I’d say most of them also thought the protesters were wrong.

There are other instances on campus (divesting from coal, stop-and-frisk) where ideologies have causes uproars that have made headlines, which is what the media associates to Brown students, and events of that nature aren’t as common. In all honestly, Brown isn’t absurdly rude about accepting others’ beliefs… so long as you’re accepting, too.

if you’re very vocal about very conservative beliefs, you’ll probably be seen as a ■■■■■ / annoyance.

I would imagine there’s much more tolerance for economic/political conservatism than for social conservatism. I wouldn’t expect to be embraced if you go around bashing the GLBTQ community, for example.
