Politics of Tulane

A question that someone asked me on a general thread made me worry about how I, as a right-wing Conservative, would fit in at Tulane. I do not need a Conservative school per se, but I would like there to be some who agree with me.

This is all just my observations, take it how you want…I would think that Tulane would be an interesting mix. It’s situated in the most liberal city in an incredibly conservative state. The Tulane Republicans have a website and a facebook page, so there are definitely conservative students. there. Maybe some current students will chime in with their observations.

Like dolphnlvr, I can only offer anecdotal observations which add to hers. Pretty much all college campuses lean left, with the notable exception of the purposely conservative schools. Although I have noticed a strong libertarian streak. Anyway, I know for at least a couple of recent years the student newspaper had a weekly columnist that was self-identified as conservative. Also, reports on the class that James Carville, the famous liberal political consultant, holds which requires it’s own application process always has decent levels of conservative participation. So I think you will be at least as well off at Tulane in the area under question as at most schools.

Well, we are conservative and a couple of weeks into the fall semester my D informed me that she joined the Tulane Republicans because she needed to be around people who thought like she did. Then she proudly sent me a picture of herself in a t-shirt that said, “Young, conservative, and fiscally attractive.” Hahaha I think most of her friends are more liberal, but many of them aren’t into politics so it’s not like that’s all they talk about. She has also found some friends who are more conservative. So, from what I hear from her is that there is a definite lean to the left, but she was able to find a place for herself and find friends that share her viewpoints.

I have two conservatively minded sons at Tulane. One jokes that the only thing wrong with his girlfriend is that she’s a lib! Of course, all the other posters have made the point that most college students lean left, and that is certainly true of Tulane, but there are definitely some conservatives running around there too. It has actually been enlightening for my sons because they have grown up in an area that is predominantly conservative. I wouldn’t say that there is a lot of political debate that goes on in social circles as a rule. But you can rest assured your child would not be the lone conservative on campus!
