For those who do, how much of that is motivated by a desire to strengthen the "legacy" status for your children? (i.e. does it really make a difference?)

p.s. of course I am talking about moderate donations - not a multi-million dollar donation or creating a new science wing, etc.

I/we give to our alma mater and grad schools. But, when son was not accepted from the wait list to the school where he was big time legacy and legitimate applicant I did mention in my sub-usual donation that I would have happily sent $45,000- but they didn't want it!

The drop in donation is not significant to them, and truly not to me. All things being equal, though, where my kids go, my money goes! All my donations are directed for student aid-nothing capital in nature. It has always seemed the 'right thing' to do since I needed aid to get through. But now, more of the money is just going to kids at a different school. So be it.

I give to both my alma mater and to my grad school. I am donating b/c I benefitted from scholarships/fellowships and hope others will, too. Ss already in college, and I will let them decide where to donate.

I give ... also not related to strengthen legacy. I was the first in my family to graduate from college. I thank my school for the opportunities it gave me. I also had near 100% financial aid from grants. Now that my owns kids' tuitions are covered (to other schools, BTW), I want to give back everything that was given to me.
Schmaltzy, but true.
