Poll: Do you think that the SAT measures intelligence

Amen to number 5...my friend scored a 570 on his SAT Writing section yet managed a 5 on AP English Composition. Does that make any sense whatsoever?

As people have mentioned before, the math one just requires memorizing processes and formulas. I do better on the CR and Writing tests, because those don't require you to memorize anything. However, I am better at math. It's just that, as a Calculus student, I don't remember some of the equations on the test. I know enough math to derive most of them, but I don't have enough time.

And the writing test is stupid. Half is on grammar, and the other half is on how well you can write a form essay in 25 minutes. First of all, anything you write in 25 minutes isn't a good measure of your writing ability. Second of all, the scores are completely objective. I saw something once where people graded passages from famous authors as if they were written for the SAT writing exam. Most did poorly, because they didn't follow a standard form. HOwever, not following a standard form, if done well, is an indication of a good writer. I'm not a good writer, so I followed the form of typical essay, and did well. My friend, a great writer (he consistently gets eights and nines on the practice AP tests we do, and his take home tests are phenomenal) did poorly.

That is why these threads about the SAT measuring intelligence seem so stupid to me. All you have to do in order to answer the question is look at the test. It is as if people get a 1500 in the mail and so they go "Hey, I must be really smart", but they forget what they did in order to get the 1500.

"The verbal might be some type of intelligence measure because more intellegent people read more"

I never did understand that. I've had my IQ tested by several psychologists and it's in 160-180 range... I haven't read a book in years. I've found that people who read a lot generally cannot think for themselves or only do it to appear intelligent and make themselves feel better. However, many people do enjoy reading for leasure, so whatever.

I'm going with the "It's not a definite measure of intelligence but there is definitely a strong correlation" crew. I think the SAT is unquestionably a better measure of intelligence than GPA or class rank. The correlation between class rank and SAT in my senior class has been far from linear and I believe the SAT has really shown the separation between those who are innately intelligent and those who simply try hard to earn good grades.

I don't really know.
I know some people who do nothing and get 2300+ and others who, are very intelligent (super math/science/literature). but can only muster a 2100 (yes the term "only" is for the CC populous)

I do not like the SAT as a measure of intelligence for several reasons.

-4 hours is too long. I can't focus for that length of time.
-SAT II's, which are far shorter, do not correlate to SAT I scores very well. A 800 SAT II Math iic and a 760 Math is wrong in my opinion.
-I think of intelligence as breadth and depth of knowledge not speed and focus. Although you do need to be intelligent to score well on the SAT, I disagree that a 2400 scorer is more intelligent than let's say a 2100 scorer or even a lower scorer.

Basically, if you score high on the SAT your probably very intelligent, but your not necessarily smarter than someone with a lower score.

Example: My friend has a 2340 SAT I, she is valedictorian, etc. Her SAT II's, with prep, were : Physics 720, Math iic 720, Literature 750. Her average in physics, and math beat me by about 2 pts per 6 weeks normally, and in English she beats me by a good 5-10 points (she is a state ready writing champ).

I have a 1970, (probably a 2100 on the last one) 760 M, 650 V, 560 W (reallly bad morning). My SAT II's, without prep were: 800 Math iic, 780 Chem, 720 US Hist.

I simply do better on shorter tests that are more knowledge related, and she can focus for longer periods of time.

SAT is better knowledge then school work.

In my board any moron who sits and studies fopr 12 hours a day can get an 80. There are few who can manage that grade without studying at all, but its rare.(Thankfully Im one of them) The few who are definitely much smarter (as we can figure the abswers out from the basics) look the same as the xerox machines to an adcom. Thats whats pathetic

i don't understand what the hell you just wrote........

Me neither. 12 hours a day? 80? What?

i said, the intelligent people get the same as morons can with loads of studying. Thats not a test of intelligence...

And yes 80's. The class topper got 84 last year (internals)

morons are people that are stupid regardless of effort..... so I disagree there.

hmmm..... you school's "intelligent" people would probably do terribly at my school because 50% of the grade is the excessive workload done out of school.

BTW, I don't get this

"The few who are definitely much smarter (as we can figure the abswers out from the basics) look the same as the xerox machines to an adcom. Thats whats pathetic"

there are times when i do think SAT's exactly that, and there are times (more often) when i seriously think its just another ploy to cause us suffering teenagers premature aging or turn us into blubbering chickens

Chickens can't blubber. They don't have lips.

hehehe

"morons are people that are stupid regardless of effort..."
I disagree. Morons are those with an ounce short on the top floor.

I still have no idea what you're talking about.

I don't think the SAT measures IQ at all. Not only that, I don't think colleges should weigh so heavily on it.

Moron:

A stupid person; a dolt.

Psychology. A person of mild mental retardation having a mental age of from 7 to 12 years and generally having communication and social skills enabling some degree of academic or vocational education. The term belongs to a classification system no longer in use and is now considered offensive.

Basically, moron is amazingly stupid...... your wrong buddy.

Typo..... like anyone should care............ ^

your wrong buddy.

You're wrong, buddy.

Bill Gates scored a 1590
