After reading a recent post it got me asking which is better?

psu > um Imho

Maryland, higher scores, better football team ;-)

Maryland-they are both very similar academically and socially, but Maryland has a much better location over Penn state.

PSU overall. Better college atmosphere and town.

ewww. UMD by far.

Maryland has higher rankings in most areas over Penn State. However, if I were you, I would take Penn State. Maryland has some serious crime issues.

Crime issues?? I live 6 miles away from UMD-CP and my neighboor goes there and iv'e never hard of any crime problems.

but w/ of the two are better for economics?

I'd rather go to UMD (UMBC!!!), because PSU-UP is in the middle of noooooooooooooooooooowhere.

Crime? Uhhhh...can't get worse than Camden.

Penn State, if you want to live in the best college town in the country (State College) and study engineering or earth and mineral sciences.

Maryland, if you want to live near the best big city in the country and study english or political science.

UMD - I"m biased b /c I am from MD. UMD, i've heard is more diverse.

UMBC's campus seems very dead. I've visited it a few times (my sister goes there), but I really can't say anything about UMCP (but I hear good things from friends that attend). I heard UMBC is ranked highly in some type of computer field (I'm not sure). Frankly, I like PSU 'cause I'm from Pa!! :) (I also hear wonderful things about PSU anyway)

What about economics and Finance??

would PS-UP, UMD-CP, or some liberal arts schools be better?

PSU easy. It is the most beautiful campus I've been too. There is no way that UMD beats PSU in location. NO WAY. Maybe in other things, but not location and atmosphere.

PSU, imho, will open more doors after you graduate just because they have one of the largest alumni networks in the country. There is some crazy stat that shows 1 out of every 127 college grads have a degree from Penn St (or close to it).

Stated right here in the 8th paragraph of this article.

Is there a ranking of PSU compared to other public universities? What are my chances of getting into PSU (main)-

1880 SAT (I hope to bring it up)
4.35/4.6 GPA
22/630 Rank
Some EC's but nothing spectacular

Penn state is fairly easy to get into...especially if you live in state
thats why i can't see why is that gr8...but the rankings show its gd

It might be one of those schools that follows "it's what you make it". I'm sure graduates are satisified with what they've left with, and undoubtedly, its facilities must be excellent. Any other thoughts?

Penn State might have a nice college town, but it is not near any other towns. Conversly, UMD has a nice college town, and is near Baltimore and DC.

Penn State is great for finance -- it's in the Smeal College of Business Adminstration which is a very good business school.

Penn State has economics programs both in the College of Liberal Arts (if you want to become a bona fide economist) or in the Smeal College of Business Adminstration if you want to get a job right out of undergrad.

Also, if you're interested in a graduate economics program, you should plan on at least minoring in mathematics, and consider double majoring.

Finally, I think big research universities like Penn State and UMD where you have to take responsibility for your own education (no hand-holding like at LACs) more accurately model the real world. That is, if you succeed at a big school, you'll have no problem succeeding after you graduate.

thanks for the input, although I think "smith" and "smeal" are quite close "rankingwise" I just need to find out what is better in terms of job placement between Penn, UMD, Babson, or a LAC...
